A mechanic has revealed the 'stupidest' reasons cars failed their MOTs in a major warning to drivers.

If something is left hanging on a rearview mirror, it'll likely lead to a failed test, and has been dubbed the 'stupidest reason’ for the car not passing its MOT.

It can be a distraction for drivers, or may block their vision, the mechanic revealed. This could be a heavy disappointment for drivers who cannot legally use their car until it passes another test. Eurofit Autocentres was quizzed on TikTok about the most unusual reasons cars could fail.

A garage mechanic said: “Right, the silliest reason a car will fail its MOT is when you have stuff hanging from your rearview mirror. Sometimes you have just one air freshener but some people have quite a lot of things hanging from there. And as you’re turning it can sway into your vision. That would fail an MOT, silly little things like that. Remove them.”

One motorist admitted they had been affected by this in the past, the Express reports. @holz896 said: “My car failed on the air freshener, the tester then moved it and passed it straight after.” Eurofit Autocentres replied: “Always worth just taking them off before your test.”

Another commenter, @Yusuf_Khan 675, added: “Thought you’d say that! Mine failed cause of that.” And fellow TikTok user @iamzeshani also added: “Mine failed it because of that.”

Late last year, motoring experts at cinch warned air fresheners could come back to bite motorists. They suggested installing extras - like air fresheners - elsewhere to ensure they do not interfere with the driver's vision when behind the wheel.

Sam Smith, spokesperson for the car buying firm, explained: “If not placed correctly, air fresheners can obstruct the driver’s view and interfere with the functionality of the airbags in the event of an accident. Motorists should always have a clear view of the road ahead, so dangling this perfumed accessory from your windscreen or rear-view mirror can hinder your visibility.

“To keep yourself safe en-route and improve your chances of success at the next MoT, mount your air freshener where it’s out of your vision, whether on the car’s dash tray or middle air vent.”

The Mirror reported earlier how millions of drivers get basic facts wrong about what can and can't result in your car failing its MOT. Research from Halfords showed that simple mistakes almost anyone you can fix at home for a few pennies could result in a "fail" - but that the majority of drivers are unaware of this.

Given driving a car after failing your MOT can result in a fine of £1,000, the car and bike chain urged people to check at home first. Aaron Edwards of Halfords Autocentres said: “The MoT test can be an anxious time – it can be a little bit like waiting for your exam results."
