People have called out a grandmother-to-be after she ruined a gender reveal by getting the wrong end of the stick - literally.

Many expecting parents can't wait to get to the 18 to 21 week mark in their pregnancy, to find out the gender of their baby. Nowadays, as well as baby showers, many people like to host gender reveal parties to announce if they are having a boy or girl in a fun way.

One unamed 31-year-old woman explained on Reddit that her co-workers wanted to host her a gender reveal party - and she thought this was great idea. But now, she says it was the "first and last" gender reveal she will ever attend. She left the event in tears of joy after finding out the gender of her baby, but it was later revealed this was completely wrong.

Hilariously, her mum, who was tasked with finding out the big news first for the reveal, "guessed" the gender of the baby after she thought she "saw a penis" on the ultrasound scan. Subsequently, the wrong coloured confetti was put inside a balloon and revealed to everyone at the gender reveal party.

The mum-to-be said she brought her mum along to the ultra-sound ahead of the gender reveal. She said: "The ultrasound tech gave me the envelope and we went on our way. My co-worker couldn't wait to see the envelope so I walked away and my mother told her over the phone."

But the excited grandmother had told her daughter's colleague the wrong gender. The following day the pregnant woman headed to work where he colleagues were waiting in a conference room with balloons ready to pop and reveal if she was having a boy or girl. She added: "They blindfolded me and walked me into the group room. I couldn't see a thing and was so excited.

"When they asked me to take off my blindfold I immediately looked up to see a bag of balloons. They screamed 'don't look up' and then they told me to pop the balloon. They gave me no direction and told me to pop the wrong balloon and no confetti came out.

"They then popped the real one for me and it was blue. I'm having a boy!" She continued: "I was so excited and absolutely grateful they did this for me that I started happy crying and let me tell you, I've never cried like that it was definitely an experience I'll remember forever."

Following the party, the expecting mother got in her car where she had kept the envelope from the doctors which certified the gender of her baby. She decided to check it and was baffled when it said she is expecting a baby girl.

She wrote: "My mother thought she saw a penis. And that was my first and last gender reveal of my life." Despite the mistake the mum-to-be seemed laid back about the mess up, adding: "It was eventful to say the least but I don't regret it."

"I would be so annoyed," one said after the gender reveal story was shared online. "I'd be so upset," added another.

However, a number of people seemed less than impressed with the new grandma and confused by her actions. One individual said: "Is there a reason your mom didn't like double check what was in the envelope? I don't get why she didn't even open it before telling people what she assumed was the gender."

Another added: "I'm confused, your mum thought she knew better than the ultrasound tech and relayed the wrong info to the people throwing the party? I'm glad you don't regret it nor seem to feel negatively about it but I'd be annoyed. All she had to do was trust the professional not go off on her own incorrect assumption."

One other wrote: "There's a reason they are ultrasound techs, because they are trained to identify things that untrained people can't. That's quite the assumption she made when verification was readily accessible, not an honest mistake in my opinion."
