King Charles waved to wellwishers after heading back to London for what is widely expected to be further treatment following his cancer diagnosis..

He and Queen Camilla took a helicopter from Sandringham, where the King had been resting, back to Buckingham Palace today and were pictured being driven in the State Bentley down the Mall to Clarence House. Charles, dressed in a grey suit with a black overcoat, was seen acknowledging people who were gathered outside the palace and along the Mall. Camilla, who was sat next to her husband, was also dressed in a black rainoat amid downpours in the capital.

It was announced last week that Charles has been diagnosed with a form of cancer and at the weekend he issued a statement praising "all those organisations which support cancer patients". He has postponed all public-facing duties, but is continuing with behind-the-scenes work on his red boxes of state papers.

Camilla has been carrying out her royal diary of engagements and last week said her husband was doing "extremely well under the circumstances". She said the King, who underwent his first bout of cancer treatment last week, had been "very touched" by all the messages of support he has received from the public.

On Sunday, the King was seen attending church in Sandringham alongside Camilla in his first public outing since the announcement of his cancer diagnosis. Walking alongside the Queen and holding an umbrella, he arrived at St Mary Magdalene Church in Sandringham, Norfolk, on Sunday morning. Wearing a brown coat, he waved to the public before being greeted by the Rev Canon Dr Paul Williams.

The day before, the King thanked people for their "many messages of support and good wishes" and said it was "equally heartening" to hear how sharing his diagnosis has helped to promote public understanding of cancer. In a message to the public, Charles said: "I would like to express my most heartfelt thanks for the many messages of support and good wishes I have received in recent days. As all those who have been affected by cancer will know, such kind thoughts are the greatest comfort and encouragement.

"It is equally heartening to hear how sharing my own diagnosis has helped promote public understanding and shine a light on the work of all those organisations which support cancer patients and their families across the UK and wider world. My lifelong admiration for their tireless care and dedication is all the greater as a result of my own personal experience." The message was signed 'Charles R'.

The Palace has called for the King's privacy to be respected, especially during his treatment, but said he wanted to make his diagnosis public because of his long-running support for cancer charities.

Buckingham Palace announced last Monday that the King, who acceded to the throne 17 months ago, has an unspecified form of the disease. He was diagnosed after a "separate issue of concern was noted" and was investigated while he was being treated for a benign and unrelated prostate condition.

Charles and Camilla's appearance today comes as Prince Harry, who briefly visited his father last week after his diagnosis, and Meghan Markle sparked a royal row after launching a new slick website. Called Sussex.com, the site quietly went live last night and appears to be a platform for the couple to keep fans up to date with their post-royal work and charitable commitments.

But despite the couple sensationally quitting as working royals more than four years ago, the new site has raised eyebrows by prominently displaying their royal titles and featuring a royal crest amid fears they could use this for commercial use.
