When you reach adulthood, you start to realise that not everything your parents told you was 100% true.

Have you ever questioned something your parents used to teach you? Maybe they had strict rules around dinner time or always made sure your bedtime routine was carried out a specific way. These ingrained habits and household rules can stick with you for years, and it's not until you're an adult with your own living space that you realise the rules were very odd - and start doing things your way instead.

That's exactly what happened to one woman who thought nothing of her parents' rules around showering until she grew up and had kids of her own and now thinks their specific restrictions seem "so strange".

The woman explained her parents used to "frown upon" the idea of showering or bathing every day, and said in her house, the concept of a daily shower was "unnecessary and probably a bit extravagant". Now, however, she thinks that outlook is bizarre, and wouldn't dream of banning her kids from showering whenever they want.

In a post on Mumsnet, she said: "As a child/teen living with my parents we were actively discouraged from showering or bathing every day. It was really frowned upon and seen as unnecessary and probably a bit extravagant. I know probably as a young child I didn't need to but as I got older and even after I turned 18 and was still living at home they would have been a bit annoyed about it if I wanted to shower every day.

"I should say where we live has no water charges so it wasn't about that. Now as an adult and a mother myself it seems so strange. I realise it's probably because my parents both came from large families that had very little money and, back then, no hot running water. Even now my parents bath weekly but sinkwash every day."

Many commenters on the post agreed that their parents also had similar attitudes toward showering and "wasting" water, which they never understood. One person said: "My parents had similar rules about bathing and showering. It was a bath once a week with sink washes in between. And no deodorant or conditioner and clothes could only be changed twice a week (except pants) to save on washing."

Other commenters also shared other strange rules their parents imposed on them, including limits on chocolate and bizarre kettle restrictions. Someone posted: "My mum didn't let me boil the kettle the whole way. I had to click it off when it was nearly done as she thought it saved energy." While another wrote: "Half a Mars bar only. All other chocolate was fine to eat in any quantity but a Mars bar was too rich."
