Tom Brady is surprised Bill Belichick has not secured a new NFL head coaching job since leaving the New England Patriots.

Belichick, 71, twice interviewed with the Atlanta Falcons before the organization instead hired Raheem Morris as their new coach. The sideline veteran is not known to have met with any other franchises and thus remains without a team for the 2024 season.

The Carolina Panthers (Dave Canales), Las Vegas Raiders (Antonio Pierce), Los Angeles Chargers (Jim Harbaugh), Seattle Seahawks (Mike Macdonald), Tennessee Titans (Brian Callahan) and Washington Commanders (Dan Quinn) - plus, of course, the Patriots (Jerod Mayo) - also made hires not named Belichick.

It means Belichick must now wait until the first round of firings in the 2024 season before returning to the sidelines.

Brady has now spoken of his surprise at his former Patriots coach's unsuccessful job hunt during the latest episode of the 'Let's Go!' podcast. "I don't know the criteria for hiring coaches. I've never been a part of it," he said.

"I mean, I'm surprised that the greatest coach ever doesn't have a job, absolutely. But I'm surprised (by) a lot of things in the NFL."

The retired quarterback also compared it to the lack of interest he received from teams when he became available after the 2019 season, stating: "When I was a free agent, there (were) a lot of teams that didn't want me (before eventually signing for the Tampa Bay Buccaneers)."

Brady later cryptically added: "There (are) a lot of things that happen that, for one reason or another, don't go exactly the way you think they should go."

The comments come days after his dad, Tom Snr, offered insight into why teams may not be rushing to appoint Belichick after clarifying the veteran "loves coaching". "I don't know if teams look at Bill - he's 71 now - I don't know that they're going to bend over backward for him, to provide him the full array of control that he wants to have," he said during an interview with the 'Boston Globe'.

"That’s the bottom line. He could probably turn up somewhere and find 16 games [to win] in two years or three.

"But if he’s out after that, and the team has reformulated their front office to accommodate his wishes … from their standpoint, I don’t know if the magic is worth the accommodations that they have to make.”

Brady Snr also reflected on Belichick's reputation since letting Brady leave and eventually win another Super Bowl with the Buccaneers while the Patriots have only played in one playoff game ever since. "He’s in a situation where he’s gotten crucified for the last few years by everybody, and a lot of luster has come off his rose.”

He added: "The last three or four years of his tenure in New England have been in the dumper. It’s too bad.”
