A live map shows the areas across the UK where snow is falling right now - as Brits have been warned 'wintry hazards' could make for challenging conditions in some parts of the country.

Weather warnings issued by the Met Office say disruptions are set to last until Saturday, February 10, with some areas expected to see much as 10 inches of snow, according to forecasts. Yesterday afternoon, snow already began to fall in parts of Scotland and the far north of England - but a number of cities are on alert today for further snowfall and icy roads. These include Manchester, Newcastle, Glasgow, Leeds and Liverpool.

Two Amber warnings for snow and ice have also been issued, highlighting the risks of wintry hazards and travel disruption. The warnings cover North Wales northwest Shropshire from 8am until 3pm on Thursday, and the South Pennines and Peak District from 12noon until 6pm on Thursday.

Outside of this, Yellow warnings are in place today (Thursday, February 8) for potentially disruptive snow extending from mid-Wales and the Midlands north. A further warning for snow and ice has been issued for Northern Ireland, with more localised disruption.

Giving the latest update on snow in the UK, Met Office Chief Meteorologist Jason Kelly said: “Cold across most areas away from the south the UK, will be met by moisture-laden air spreading from the south. Where milder air encounters cold air, rain, sleet and snow will develop, bringing the risk of 2-5cm of snow in places, whilst some other areas see little or no snow.

“Over higher ground 5-10cm is likely, while locations above 200m within the Amber warning areas could see up to 25cm of snowfall. Snow here could drift in strong to gale force easterly winds. As the milder air from the south gradually pushes northwards the focus for wintry hazards also shifts northward with warnings issued for Scotland.”

Cold-Health Alerts are also in force for parts of England, as the UK Health Security Agency highlighted the potential impacts cold weather may have on the health and the social care sector.

Amy Shaw, National Network Manager at National Highways, said: “Freezing conditions bring hazards such as snow and ice, so take every possible step to understand your journey in advance and allow lots of extra time when travelling to prepare for the unexpected. It is therefore always important to plan ahead for your journey, check the weather forecasts, and if weather conditions become challenging, adjust your driving behaviour and take extra care.”

National Highways also reminded motorists to keep 'TRIP' in mind ahead of journeys in wintry weather. Top-up: oil, water, screenwash; Rest: rest every two hours; Inspect: Inspect tyres and lights and Prepare: check your route and the weather forecast before you travel.
