Prince Harry still has genuine affection for sister-in-law Kate Middleton despite their heartbreaking rift.

The 39-year-old once described the Princess of Wales as “the sister I never had”, and the duo enjoyed a tight-knit bond after she married his big brother, Prince William. The trio were regularly spotted at public events together, and even launched a charity together, the Royal Foundation, which launched a mental health initiative called Heads Together.

However, their relationship soured when Harry introduced Meghan Markle to his brother and sister-in-law, and the women failed to spark up a friendship due to their differences. In his memoir Spare, Harry revealed Meghan had irked Kate by asking to borrow her lip gloss, something he recalled made the mother-of-three “grimace”, while their well-documented fallout over Princess Charlotte’s bridesmaid dress subsequently ended any bond between the two.

At the time of Spare’s release in January last year, Harry sat down for an interview with ITV’s Tom Bradby, and was quizzed over the allegations he had made in his book about his family, including Prince William, King Charles and Kate. Body language expert Judi James told The Mirror that Harry’s gestures hinted at his true feelings towards her, despite the collapse of their relationship following the publication of his book.

“There was an air of tragedy about Harry's body language during this long and deeply revealing interview. He ended with verbal assurances that he was 'the happiest I have been', and that he had 'made peace with a lot of what’s happened'. In true US style, he claimed to be in a 'good head space' and that any discussions with his family now wouldn’t leave any 'lingering' thoughts,” she explained.

“But the man we watched up to this point used conflicting body language signals that made many of his emotions still look rather raw. His gestures and his sound bites and the way he swerved away from some more difficult topics or used non-specific claims suggested anger, resentment and righteousness. But there were also moments when he leaked out more spontaneous signals of love and even humour and fun,” Judi added.

But when he was asked about Kate, Harry’s gestures revealed his true affection towards his sister-in-law, and could hint at a possible reunion between the two. “There was a rather robotic recitation of 'I love my father, I love my brother, I love my family' but when he spoke of his father he appeared close to tears. His account of growing up with his brother regurgitated signals of fun and loyalty and when Kate’s name was mentioned his features softened and his eyes wrinkled into an affectionate-looking eye-smile,” she shared.

In his memoir, Harry called Kate “carefree, sweet and kind”, and said he was bowled over when William first introduced her. “She'd done a gap year in Florence, knew about photography, art. And clothes. She loved clothes. Her name was Kate,” he sweetly recalled.

Harry said he enjoyed “making Kate laugh”, and confessed he consoled himself with “thoughts of all our future laughing fits together” when he became upset about his brother getting married and starting a new life away from him. “The sister I'd never had and always wanted, and I was pleased that she'd be standing by Willy's side forever,” Harry wrote.
