Prince Harry agreed to work around his father King Charles, it is understood.

The Duke of Sussex spent just under an hour with the monarch at Clarence House this afternoon after jetting into London from California earlier today. Harry cleared his diary and made the journey alone, with Meghan Markle and their children Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet remaining at home in the United States.

The King personally called Harry, his older son Prince William, and siblings Princess Anne, Prince Andrew and Prince Edward to inform them of his diagnosis last week. But as the Buckingham Palace statement regarding the King's health only came last night, it is believed Harry agreed to wait until then before travelling back to his homeland.

But despite the meeting between Harry and Charles, William has no plans to meet his estranged brother. The Prince of Wales remains focused on looking after his wife Kate, who is recovering from abdominal surgery and is taking extended leave from public duties until after Easter.

Sources close to Harry, who now lives in Montecito, California, have suggested he would have welcomed an opportunity to meet with William "if the opportunity were to arise". A source said: "The Duke's primary reason to travel to the UK is to visit his father. If the opportunity were to arise to see the Prince of Wales then the Duke would have gladly accepted it." But a source close to William said: 2The prince’s main focus is for his wife, who is recovering from surgery, his three children and now his father. There are no plans for Harry’s visit to act as some kind of vehicle for reconciliation."

Meanwhile, it is thought Harry will take time during his visit to the UK to see his cousin Princess Beatrice, who was seen at Clarence House this morning, alongside her husband Edoardo Mapelli Mozzi.

It comes as Charles was pictured looking emotional and waving to crowds as he was seen for the first time since news of his cancer diagnosis emerged. He was driven in the State Bentley alongside Queen Camilla from Clarence House down The Mall to Buckingham Palace, where he was taken by helicopter to Sandringham to continue his cancer treatment. This second condition will now receive "appropriate treatment from a specialist team", Buckingham Palace announced.

Prince William has not visited his father since the public announcement by Buckingham Palace, but the two have in recent weeks spent a considerable amount of time together in the lead-up to the King’s hospital stay, sources said. William is likely to be undertaking some duties on his father's behalf, it is understood, but Counsellors of State, who are appointed when a monarch cannot fulfil their duties as head of state, are not expected to be needed.
