The news of King Charles' shock cancer diagnosis will have "landed hard" with Prince Harry, according to an expert.

Harry has cleared his diary to travel from his home in California to London after the news broke about his father's health last night. The Duke of Sussex has a troubled relationship with his father, although they are still in contact - and the trip will be a solo one, with Meghan Markle staying in the US with the couple's two children – Prince Archie and Princess Lilibet. The decision for Harry to come to the UK raises hopes of a reconciliation between him and his father - and royal expert and historian Dr Tessa Dunlop says despite the bad blood being spilt, it's clear Harry has always loved his dad.

She told the Mirror: "With his wife Meghan, Prince Harry had been expected in Vancouver, Canada, next week; on Valentine’s Day the Sussexes were to join the One Year to Go festivities for 2025’s first winter Invictus Games, but after last night’s news he will fly to Britain 'in the coming days' and visit his ailing father. Perhaps predictably given strained relations, his wife and children will remain in America.

"Along with his siblings, King Charles’s sons were among the first to discover that their father has cancer. That medical diagnosis is always a shock and will have hit Harry hard. Estranged from his family in recent years, living miles away in California, this reminder that his father, the king, is a mere mortal will have landed hard.

"For all the bad blood that has been spliled since the Sussexes' departure from working royal life, Harry has always been clear that he loves his father. As a single parent, Charles did his best for his 'darling boy' and that included walking bride Meghan down the aisle of St George’s chapel. Charles will be as keen as Harry that bridges are rebuilt. There was a hope that before Christmas the first move might have been made, with tentative talk of a seasonal get-together, but in late November Omid Scobie ’s book ruined any chance of an early rapprochement.

"A get well message was sent by the Sussexes in the wake of Charles and Kate’s recent health procedures but more is needed. Plenty water has travelled under the bridge, no further truth bombs have been denotated by the Montecito pair, and the scene is set for father and son to quietly get on with the business of forgiveness and future planning."

However, when it comes to Harry's older brother Prince William, any reconcilliation with him maybe harder. Harry claimed his brother physically attacked him and that the King put his own interests above Harry’s, and was jealous of Meghan and the Princess of Wales. And Tessa added: "Here in Britain we miss Harry, so goodness knows how his father feels. As for the Prince, perhaps he has been away long enough to discover that his British family has some redeeming characteristics after all.

"In the longer term William and Harry will have to heed their father’s plaintive request: ‘please boys, don’t make my final years a misery’ and also bury the hatchet. But with the Princess of Wales still out of action, and William under considerable pressure to compensate for an absent wife and father, he might be in a less conciliatory mood. Harry would be wise to start with his father."
