Camilla fears she'd be lost if left without Charles amid King's cancer scare

Queen Camilla is lost without King Charles and visited him every day while he was in hospital recently as she loves him so deeply, a royal expert has said.

The couple spent some difficult days apart recently as the King had surgery for an enlarged prostate, but it will only have made the Queen more determined to be at her husband's side whenever possible, according to Jennie Bond, the BBC's former royal correspondent.

Ms Bond told OK magazine: “It seemed very natural for Camilla to stay at the hospital all day until the operation was over and when he was in recovery, and to pop back to share supper with her man each day that he was there. I think it was utterly endearing that they behaved like a ‘normal’ couple. I always think of them as a pair of old, comfy slippers - completely content in one other’s company, and rather lost when one of them is absent.”

Ms Bond gave an insight into what went on inside the hospital during their visits, adding: "There would have been the usual tittle-tattle between husband and wife about the gardens and how the grandchildren had been getting on, rather than any official matters.

“She probably arrived with an extra book, maybe a sweet treat or two and any home comforts to make the stay as happy as possible.”

Ms Bond added that the pressured experience of seeing her 75-year-old husband in surgeons’ care will have served as a wake-up call for the Queen. “Even though this health scare was never going to be something fatal, it probably did make Camilla sit up quite sharply and think about her and Charles’ mortality and what life would look like as they grow older - especially if she was ever left alone in her position.

“I think Charles will be reluctant to slow down so early on in his reign but Camilla will quietly carry on nagging him to take better care of himself and reminding him that he’s not as young as he thinks he is. The last thing she wants is for him to go to work too soon and have a complication, so I imagine nurse Camilla will be in full flow and will want to fuss over him.

"She’ll be feeling quite righteous that she’s got him to herself and he can’t keep being distracted by work so they’ll relish this time together, laughing, pottering around in the garden, going for walks and reading in different corners of the same room - as Camilla said they love to do.”

A statement from Buckingham Palace today told the world that King Charles has cancer and would be stepping back after taking advice from his doctors. It read: "During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.

"His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties. Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual.

"The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.

"His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer."
