King Charles has announced today he has been diagnosed with cancer.

The 75-year-old monarch received hospital treatment for a benign enlarged prostate last week, and while he was there, a "separate issue of concern was noted", and further tests confirmed he has "a form of cancer", Buckingham Palace said in a statement.

The monarch has begun treatment immediately and will not be attending public-facing duties as a result, but his wife, Queen Camilla, will continue to be seen at public events. Camilla, 76, is the monarch's biggest supporter and is known to bring out the very best in her husband, having been described as his "calming force".

Royal biographer Christopher Wilson, who studied the couple in the book A Greater Love, previously told PEOPLE that Camilla soothes Charles in a way no one else can. "Her presence reassures him," Wilson said. "Despite all the trappings of majesty, it's cold and lonely at the top, and it's easy to see the comfort she provides him."

When appropriate, Camilla brings a little levity to royal responsibilities, according to royal photographer Arthur Edwards. "She never lost her common touch," he added. "She makes him laugh. When something triggers them, you see them just laughing together. They do things with such enthusiasm."

Charles and Camilla might have had a controversial start to their love story, but experts say they have an undeniable connection and "deep intensity" that continues to grow.

Body language expert Darren Stanton recently spoke to Betfair Bingo and said it's clear the King is dependent on his wife. He said: "They have the same passion for each other still to this day. During public events, Charles is often looking around and fidgeting when Camilla isn't by his side, which shows how dependent he is on her. But when they are together, we see this genuine laughter shared between them with engaged eye contact, and this shows how they are on the same page emotionally.

"When he was a young Prince, we rarely saw him display a relaxed nature. Camilla brings that side out of him where he can be himself, let go and just enjoy his time as King."

Buckingham Palace declined to confirm the type of cancer King Charles has, but the news comes just one day after the monarch - who acceded to the throne just 17 months ago - was last seen on Sunday when he attended church in Sandringham.

Last week, the King was admitted to hospital for treatment on his enlarged prostate. Charles, 75, was seen entering The London Clinic in London on Friday morning with the Queen at his side. It is the same hospital where the Princess of Wales is recovering after undergoing successful abdominal surgery last week and it is understood the King has visited her.

The news announced last week came just an hour and a half after Kensington Palace announced that the Princess of Wales was recovering in hospital after undergoing abdominal surgery, and would be recuperating and away from official duties for up to three months.
