Queen Camilla will continue her public duties while her husband King Charles goes through his treatment for cancer, the Palace has confirmed.

While the King is expected to take a prolonged period away from royal duties, his wife will be seen at public events. Insiders have said the King will begin his treatment immediately and there has been no confirmation of when he will return.

Palace officials have said the King would be looking forward to doing so as soon as possible and he will continue to receive his government Red Boxes as usual throughout his period of treatment. There are no plans to engage Counsellors of State to take over the monarch’s official duties.

The Monarch was last month diagnosed with an enlarged prostate and spent three days in hospital after undergoing a medical procedure for the benign condition. It was during this intervention that a separate issue of concern was noted and subsequently diagnosed as a form of cancer.

The King had been recuperating at his Sandringam estate in Norfolk before returning to London earlier today to commence cancer treatment as an out-patient. The Royal Standard was flying above Buckingham Palace this evening, denoting the King was in residence.

Royal sources said the King “does not have prostate cancer” and stressed that Charles’ condition is not typical and his secondary diagnosis and treatment plan have not yet been confirmed by doctors.

The statement from Buckingham Palace reads: "During The King’s recent hospital procedure for benign prostate enlargement, a separate issue of concern was noted. Subsequent diagnostic tests have identified a form of cancer.

"His Majesty has today commenced a schedule of regular treatments, during which time he has been advised by doctors to postpone public-facing duties.

"Throughout this period, His Majesty will continue to undertake State business and official paperwork as usual. The King is grateful to his medical team for their swift intervention, which was made possible thanks to his recent hospital procedure. He remains wholly positive about his treatment and looks forward to returning to full public duty as soon as possible.

"His Majesty has chosen to share his diagnosis to prevent speculation and in the hope it may assist public understanding for all those around the world who are affected by cancer."
