Royal sources have slammed "ridiculous" allegations that the Princess of Wales was placed into a coma during her recent hospital stay as false.

Palace aides are believed to be furious by claims the mum-of-three was induced into a coma after she underwent major abdominal surgery at the London Clinic on January 16. Kate returned home nearly two weeks after the operation and will take time away from royal duties until around Easter. But speculation grew after the operation, with the public demanding to know more information about the private procedure. The most recent claims about the Princess are from Spanish journalist Concha Calleja.

Just one day before Kate was released from hospital, Calleja claimed that doctors were forced to take "quick action" as they were "saving her life". The TV host, who made the claim on Fiesta, said she had “spoken to an aide from the royal household in a completely off-the-record manner”.

She went on to say that the 42-year-old was battling with "complications", which prompted an urgent response from medics. She told the show's 900,000 viewers: “The decision was to put her in an induced coma. They had to intubate her. There were serious complications that they didn’t expect because the operation went well, but the postoperative period didn’t go so well.”

The journalist further alleged that "practically an entire hospital is being set up" at the Cambridges' home in Windsor and said she is "possibly going to require a lot of assistance." Calleja further claimed that Kate was admitted to hospital after she "began to feel unwell, not for the first time", reports The Times.

The health scare rumour continued to spread after several Spanish media outlets went on to publish the claims. Kensington Palace has strongly denied the allegations, with a Palace source branding the claims as "total nonsense." The source added: “No attempt was made by that journalist to fact-check anything that she said with anyone in the household. It’s fundamentally totally made-up, and I’ll use polite English here: it’s absolutely not the case.”

An earlier statement released from the Palace about Kate said: "“The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private.

"The Princess of Wales wishes to apologise to all those concerned for the fact that she has to postpone her upcoming engagements. She looks forward to reinstating as many as possible, as soon as possible.”
