A woman has told of her horror after leaving her six-month-old daughter with her meddling' mother-in-law resulted in her piercing her child’s ears without her consent. The 32-year-old told how her husband was from a culture where piecing baby girls’ ears was 'common practice', however, she had made it abundantly clear to her mother-in-law that she wouldn’t be doing it until her daughter was old enough to make the decision for herself.

However, after leaving her daughter with her mother-in-law one weekend, she was left ‘blindsided’ after returning to find she had taken her child to have her ears pierced behind her back: “She decided to pierce her ears without my knowledge or consent. When I saw this, I threw a fit,” she revealed. “She was crying in pain, and I took her to the doctor to get advice on whether or not to take them out (our family doctor removed them as they were clearly bothering her),” she said.

After becoming so enraged at the selfish actions of her mother-in-law, she shared that she had made the decision that she would not be allowed to spend any more alone time with her daughter until she was a teenager, as her trust had been 'severely broken': “That includes everyone else on that side of the family except for my sister-in-law, who's on my side about this.” she fumed. “I also told her that if she had a problem with that, I'd report what she did to the police.” And while she said that her husband was on her side, she admitted he didn’t think it was: “As big of a deal as I'm making it out to be.”

After raging against her meddling mother-in-law on Reddit, readers were quick to side with the mother, with one saying: “Against your express wishes, your mother-in-law altered your child's body. She believes she has the same authority over your child. Your husband needs to be treating this more seriously because it's a big deal.” Another reader agreed, commenting: “Your mother-in-law made a body modification to your child against your express wishes. She thinks she has equal say over your child. That is a big deal.”

One was fuming on the woman’s behalf, offering advice on what to tell her mother-in-law: “You were told NO. You hurt our child. You broke our trust. You can’t be around our child unsupervised anymore as you’ve proven you are untrustworthy and unsafe.” Another reader said that her mother-in-law had made it clear that she would never respect her boundaries or wishes, while another said that ear piercing a baby was akin to mutilation: “I seriously believe that piercing babies ears should be classed as child abuse.”

“Sure, stab a six-month-old twice, for cosmetic reasons, behind the parent's back. That is a great trust builder. Mother-in-law is reaping what she sows,” raged one reader, while another said it was important for the mum to prioritise her mental and emotional health in situations where interactions become intolerable. “Setting clear boundaries is necessary for maintaining your well-being. Stick to your guns.”
