When you're travelling, especially if you're alone, you may have safety concerns, and will want to do everything you can to ensure your trip goes as smoothly as possible - and one flight attendant has shared a little-known hack to help.

Cabin crew member Esther, who flies with KLM, regularly shares her insider knowledge regarding travelling, and she issued a stark warning for holidaymakers, including a trick that they should always complete when entering a new hotel room.

In the clip, the Dutch flight attendant urged hotel guests to "always" throw a bottle of water under the bed when first entering a hotel room, to ensure "no one is under the bed without looking".

The idea is that if the bottle "doesn't come out of the other side", then you may want to investigate further, by getting a member of staff or a fellow traveller in your group to look into it with you. However, if the bottle does pop out on the other side of the room, you can carry on as normal, safe in the knowledge there are no unwelcome visitors.

Esther's not the only flight attendant to have shared her tricks to determine if you've got unwanted visitors. Demi Bonita, from Spain, revealed she has a sneaky hack to check if someone's been in your hotel room while you've been out.

She suggested: "Put the 'do not disturb card' between the door, so you can notice if someone has been in your room." Wearing her flight attendant uniform, she then exhibits the technique of sliding the pass between the door and wall before closing it. "One hour later, no one has been here," she added after leaving and then returning to the room.

Meanwhile another cabin crew member explained that she makes four key checks every time she checks in to a new hotel, before settling into her room. That includes looking out where people could hide, and checking "anything that I can’t directly see behind - doors, curtains, large cabinets, under beds, and box springs".

It's not just flight attendants who have handy tips for holidaymakers. One hotel worker has warned Brits that they should always switch off the lights when first arriving in a hotel room - or they could end up facing some disgusting consequences.

Halee, who says she has worked in the hotel industry for 15 years, revealed some of her top tips for checking in to a hotel, and explained that you could be putting yourself at risk of being bitten by bed bugs if you skip some simple checks.

That includes turning off the lights when you first arrive, closing the shades and then using a torch (the torch on your phone will do). Using the torch, she then always checks under the bed, as well as any nooks and crannies, warning that bed bugs like "corners and the creases" of bedding and linen.

She added: "The reason you should check your bed with the lights off is because bed bugs are actually nocturnal so they're more likely to be out and about looking for their prey."
