The moment shameless thieves drove off in a £70,000 Range Rover in less than one minute is captured on CCTV.

The theft happened in St John's Wood, north London, at around 5:30am on Tuesday 9 January. CCTV footage shows how two masked thieves pulled up alongside the vehicle on a motorbike. While one of them kept watch, the other jumped off and rushed to the car's window.

The yobs can be seen using a crowbar to pry open the front window of the black 4x4. Once open, the unknown assailant jumps headfirst through the window, wriggling their way in while their feet are left dangling in the air outside.

The car is started up a few seconds later and, with the headlights on, the thief is seen driving off. The motorbike speeds away in the opposite direction

A few seconds later the vehicle was started up and the headlights turned on, before the thief drove it off as the accomplice on the motorbike sped away in the opposite direction in the affluent district of leafy residential streets.

The CCTV has been published on social media despite DVLA data showing there has been a near 30% decrease in Range Rover Sport thefts in the past year. Previous statistics released in May last year said that Land Rover was the most stolen brand, with 924 stolen per 100,000 in the 12 months to March 2023.

Separate data in February showed there was a 47 per cent jump in the number of Range Rovers reported stolen to police between 2021 and 2022 - a rise from 3,754 to 5,533. The figures, released back in February last year by car comparison site LeaseLoco, showed there was a 47 per cent jump in the number of Range Rovers reported stolen to police between 2021 and 2022 - a rise from 3,754 to 5,533.

Alongside this, it is understood Range Rovers are seeing a sharp decline in price, as owners struggle to get the vehicles insured because of their high theft rate. The average price of a used Range Rover has fallen 9 per cent since May to £35,224, compared to a decline of 3 per cent for all cars according to Auto Trader.
