Woman uses 'paper towel trick' to keep strawberries fresher for longer
Ever feel like buying strawberries can be a fruitless task if they don’t seem to last long enough for you to enjoy them? Well, thanks to one savvy strawberry connoisseur, there are just a few simple steps you can take to ensure you have fresher fruit for longer.
According to @thekitchn, which has more than 300k followers on TikTok, the key is in the prep. And after showcasing the simple strawberry steps on the video-sharing platform, many were keen to give it a go. The video advises that you’ll need one part white distilled vinegar and 3 parts water; the berries are then added to the solution and soaked.
“The vinegar destroys bacteria and mould and removes dirt,” she says, before advising you then drain and rinse with cold water. Moisture is the biggest reason why berries go bad, so dry in a paper towel-lined salad spinner, or pat dry to remove excess water.”

Once they’re completely dry, viewers were told to store the fruit in a paper towel-lined container, with the lid placed loosely on top, before putting in the fridge to chill: “This will help keep them fresh for an extra few days,” she advised.

Lots loved the advice, with one adding a drop of their own, commenting: “You can also use a little bit of honey in the container, since honey is a natural preservative.” Most loved the idea, with one saying: “Great hack!” and another commenting: “Excellent idea, thank you!”
However, not all viewers were convinced, with one disgruntled viewer saying: “I tried this and got mushy, bad strawberries,” and another exclaiming: “What a lot of faff!”
