Needing to go to the bathroom can sometimes strike you at the most inconvenient times. It’ll be when you just get home and can’t find the front door keys, or are stuck in a traffic jam with no way out.

One woman has shared how she had a mortifying mishap on an airplane after underestimating just how much she needed to use the toilet - but a pilot has tried to reassure her that it's nothing to be embarrassed about. Sharing her humiliation for other people to read, the passenger confessed she felt “stupid” for thinking she could hold it in.

She wrote: “It was hurting and my legs and fingers started to twitch, couldn’t hold it in and I peed in the seat. I immediately ran up to use the bathroom when it landed. I literally ran down the aisle and bumped into like f***ing six people in the process. Almost tripped a few times and I know the back of my clothes was wet and I just kept saying sorry and excuse me.

“Everyone saw, everyone knew this happened I wanna cry. I don’t want to go into detail anymore, the more I think the more embarrassed I feel. The worst part was when I was done I had to wait as everyone else got up and left the plane. I stood there, looking down, ignoring the worker cleaning my wet seat, with my sister and mum too.”

The woman confessed that even though she felt terrible for the cabin crew who had to clean up her seat she couldn’t bring herself to say anything to them. She went on: “I got home and immediately sobbed in the shower and stressed about it all day. I’ve got social anxiety and terrible self-esteem, which just made the whole thing so much worse.”

People reading the Reddit post were incredibly sympathetic and rushed to assure her that sometimes these things happen. One person replied: "Oof, sorry you had that happen! I once sh*t myself in a Walmart so, I can sympathize with you for sure. A lot of us have had embarrassing accidents, it'll feel less humiliating with time."

Someone else shared: "Sometimes it just can’t be helped, it isn’t your fault at all. I am 27 years old and I recently (within the last 3 months actually) had an accident in front of multiple people in a parking lot too. I laughed out of nervousness but deep down I wanted to die. Now my partner and I joke about it, it doesn’t bother me anymore. There are so, so many people on this earth, just remind yourself that you’ll never have to face them again and it will all be okay!"

Another person claiming to be a pilot wrote: "Coming from the person flying the plane, you can always go to the bathroom if you need to. Don’t let the sign or flight attendants scare you."
