Prince William visited Princess of Wales in hospital today

Prince William today visited his wife the Princess of Wales as she spends a third day in hospital recuperating from abdominal surgery.

Kate, 42, is said to be "doing well" but will spend up to three months away from royal duties, with William clearing his diary and stepping back temporarily from his official role to care for his wife and children. Today, he was seen leaving the London Clinic where his wife underwent surgery and is recovering at around 12.35pm.

William drove himself away from the hospital in an Audi e-Tron GT Carbon Vorsprung, followed by a Land Rover Discovery, and left by the back entrance during the low-key, private visit.

It has today emerged doting dad Prince William was at home with the children on Wednesday evening, and that the royal youngsters had all attended school as normal that day. All three attend Lambrook School in Berkshire.

It's not known if George, Charlotte and Louis have visited their mother in hospital yet - but given the length of her stay, they might well take a trip to the London Clinic in Marylebone, where the Princess is recovering.

Queen Camilla pictured opening new initiative at Aberdeen Art Gallery

Meanwhile, Queen Camilla has today opened the new "Safe Space" during a visit to Aberdeen Art Gallery, as part of an initiative to provide help and guidance to people if they suspect someone is living with domestic abuse.

As reported the Queen has said the King is “fine” and “looking forward to getting back to work” as he awaits treatment for an enlarged prostate. She made the comments during this visit.

Kate's brave confession about medical condition that put her in hospital

The latest hospitalisation comes several years after the Princess of Wales was diagnosed with acute morning sickness - hyperemesis gravidarum - during pregnancy and described the experience as 'rotten', with Kate even admitting to preferring labour as a result.

In the early stages of pregnancy with her firstborn Prince George in 2012, her husband, the now Prince of Wales, rushed her to hospital as she became severely sick.

The future Queen hasn't shied away from her condition when sympathising with others, and opened up to a father who told of his wife going through extreme morning sickness. During a visit to the Orchards Centre in Kent last September, which supports children with special needs, Kate met with father-of-four Steve Ikebuwa.

The Princess of Wales has not been seen in public since she attended the Royal Family’s Christmas Day service, when she was seen making jokes with members of the public.

Expert explains why Kate is off until Easter

The Princess of Wales will remain in hospital for "ten to 14 days" and is "unlikely" to return to royal duties until after Easter following abdominal surgery, Kensington Palace has said.

Dr Deborah Lee, from Dr Fox Online Pharmacy, told Express.co.uk about why Kate might be in hospital for so long. She said: "For abdominal surgery, most people stay in the hospital for four to seven days. After laparoscopic surgery [a type of keyhole surgery], this is reduced to two to four days.

What has the Royal Family said?

Kensington Palace, the official residence of Prince William and Kate, said in a statement yesterday afternoon: "Her Royal Highness The Princess of Wales was admitted to hospital yesterday for planned abdominal surgery.

The surgery was successful and it is expected that she will remain in hospital for ten to fourteen days, before returning home to continue her recovery. Based on the current medical advice, she is unlikely to return to public duties until after Easter.

"The Princess of Wales appreciates the interest this statement will generate. She hopes that the public will understand her desire to maintain as much normality for her children as possible; and her wish that her personal medical information remains private.

"Kensington Palace will, therefore, only provide updates on Her Royal Highness' progress when there is significant new information to share. The Princess of Wales wishes to apologise to all those concerned for the fact that she has to postpone her upcoming engagements. She looks forward to reinstating as many as possible, as soon as possible."

The Royal Family has been hit with a double health scare today after it was revealed the Princess of Wales is in hospital following abdominal surgery while King Charles is set to have prostate treatment next week.

Announcements about the two royals came within the space of just an hour and a half with future Queen Kate, 42, is expected to stay in hospital for up to two weeks after having a planned procedure at the prestigious London Clinic.
