Cute moment stranger knits hat for 'mesmerised' baby during her first flight
A five-month-old girl named Romy was gifted a hand-made hat while aboard her very first flight—the sweet moment has since gone viral on TikTok.
Jake and Kelly Levine captured the cute moment and later posted it to TikTok where it received nearly 8 million hits and 1.5 million likes. The encounter began when the couple brought the newborn on a flight from Mexico to New Jersey, which marked the end of a trip the parents had treated themselves to for the new year.
A woman seated next to the couple, who has a small crochet business, noticed how interested Romy was in her knitting. "The woman next to us noticed that Romy loved to watch her knit," one caption read in the TikTok video. The small business owner, later identified as Meegan Rubin in the post, secretly worked on a beanie for the newborn, which suited her perfectly.

"I was sitting in the aisle and the baby was in the aisle so she was gazing at me the entire flight. I was working on a sweater," Meegan told Good Morning America. "She was literally mesmerised by it." She said Romy's cuteness is what implored her to start knitting.

She recalls thinking: "I was like, if I [don't] run out of this yarn and there's time, I'll do it, because I had the same color yarn as her little outfit. I couldn't help it. I was like, this baby is getting something because she's too cute."
Kelly, who appeared to be interested in Meegan's work as well, said she was aware of Romy's enthrallment, noting how fast the small business owner's hands were moving.
"[Romey] ended up taking a liking to this woman next to us and the woman was crocheting. Her hands were moving a million miles an hour and Romey was just obsessed with it," Kelly explained, adding that her daughter is "observant" and "very curious." Meegan later said her hands were moving fast out of nervousness that the newborn's gift wouldn't be ready in time—One hour of the trip had remained when she started.
Upon the beanie's completion, which was right as every passenger began to leave, Meegan exclaimed "i'm finished" and quickly tested whether the hat fit baby Romy.
The surprise was refreshing as the couple was worried how Romy would react to being on an aircraft for the first time. "It was Romey's first flight and obviously, we were a little bit nervous," Kelly said. Kelly promoted Meegan's business in the video, telling her followers to "give her a follow and pay it forward."
