If you've settled on a baby name you love, take a second to make sure there are absolutely no problems with it before you use it - as you could be dooming your child to a life of embarrassment.

One woman has issued an urgent warning to parents to choose their children's names wisely, as she explained she always has to deal with awkward encounters over her email address whenever she starts a new job. Sam Hart, 27, has a perfectly normal name that you wouldn't suspect would ever give her any trouble. However, due to the way most companies format their email addresses, she's been left in the unfortunate position of having a hilarious work email - "s.hart".

Sam, from Virginia, US, said her email issue has meant that she's had to deal with uncomfortable email exchanges with HR at all of the corporate jobs she's held, and every time they ask her if she wouldn't mind having an email address that goes against the company norm as they can't allow her to have an email that reads "shart".

Now, Sam is begging parents to think carefully about all aspects of the names they give their children, as a seemingly innocent name can turn into something very different when looked at in another way. She said: "I think parents should think about it and run different formulas. They should think about monograms, initials, think about all that stuff."

The woman said she didn't realise the hilarious way her name could be shortened until her parents bought her a custom number plate for her car when she was a teenager, and her boyfriend at the time told her what the word meant, leaving her "mortified". Ever since, her shortened name has led to multiple embarrassing emails from prospective employers, with some asking if they can change her email address.

She added: "At my first job, in 2019, I was working in communications at a local government. I got a very polite email from HR saying: 'This is how we structure our emails but I don't think it's right for you, do you mind if we change yours?'

"The job I currently have were saints. I sent them an email about it and it's not a lovely thing to bring up, it's a bit embarrassing, and they had to back and change my details. They were lovely, they said: 'Oh! we didn't realise.' They changed my email, my log-ins, everything."

The woman doesn't believe her unfortunate name blunder has negatively impacted her employment chances, but she used to worry that it would. She explained: "I have worried about it. I don't want to seem unprofessional by having the conversation. It's gross."

Sam went viral after sharing a video about her name experience on TikTok, where she posts under the username @thesam_show, and many others were quick to share their own name woes in the comments. One person said: "My name is Sue Hartlove so my work emails are always shartlove," while another added: "My maiden name is Rash, first name Tamsin. So my first professional job (before I was married) was Trash."
