Erik ten Hag has insisted he will 'survive the setbacks' after Roy Keane predicted he would be sacked by Manchester United within the next few months.

Ten Hag has endured a dreadful second season in charge at Old Trafford, with United sitting eighth in the Premier League, having already been knocked out of the Carabao Cup and the Champions League.

The pressure has been ramping up on the Dutchman, especially with Sir Jim Ratcliffe arriving to take control of all football matters at the Red Devils. Though Ten Hag's men progressed into the fourth round of the FA Cup with a win over Wigan on Monday, Keane delivered a gloomy prediction for the boss.

The legendary captain stated his belief that Ten Hag's time in charge would soon be coming to an end. Asked if he could see the DNA Ten Hag was trying to establish, Keane replied: “No, not really.

"I think that’s the problem with United, you know what you’re going to get when you turn up. The manager there mentions the ‘project’ – it probably means he’ll be gone in the next few months. This dreaded word ‘project’.

"No, I didn’t see it tonight with United and I’ve not seen it for the last few months. But, again, they’re in the next round and it’s an easy draw the next time round, but you need a better level of performance. And the chances they made tonight, you always expect more.”

Despite Keane's gloomy outlook, Ten Hag has insisted he is still the man to lead United. The Dutchman led his side to a comfortable if uninspiring win over Wigan in the third round of the FA Cup on Monday night.

Goals from Diogo Dalot and Bruno Fernandes ensured their passage into the fourth round, where they will travel to Newport County or Eastleigh away. After the win, Ten Hag hailed Ratcliffe's arrival and insisted he is ready to battle through the challenges.

"I think it’s an inspiration. Everyone is optimistic but there’s a lot of work to do. We have had a lot of setbacks. I think in the summer we were on a good way, but it’s a journey, it’s a project," the United boss said.

"Now we have to deal with some setbacks but we will keep alive, we will survive it, and we will strike back. The FA Cup is all about winning. It’s a knockout. If you have to replay [the tie], it’s two games.

"But you want to finish the job and that’s exactly the words I used in the dressing room: ‘Job done’. We created in the first half five or six very good chances. It was, I think, good football and we should have taken more from that.

"But if you don’t score, you have to stay focused and I think that is also what we did. You have to go from game to game, especially in the cup. So we take that, but now, first, all our focus is on Spurs [in the Premier League], of course."
