The Traitors star Mollie Pearce has opened up on her health battles and how her “biggest fear came true”.

Model Mollie, 21, from Bristol, has a stoma bag after being diagnosed with ulcerative colitis when she was just 11 years old. This is a long-term condition where the colon, the large intestine, becomes inflamed. In Mollie’s case, it was so severe that doctors took the decision to remove her colon three years ago.

But instead of being self-conscious about it, Mollie proudly shows off her stoma bag on her social media channels and even promotes stylish stoma-friendly underwear sets. Revealing that before the life-changing operation hospital had become her “second home”, Mollie said she had been in and out of remission for eight years – and this had stopped her from being able to do many of the things her friends could do growing up.

She said while she seemed to look completely healthy on the outside, colitis is a “vicious disease which will tear you up from the inside out” and revealed sometimes she struggled to walk upstairs in her own home as she was in so much pain.

Mollie now aims to promote awareness of colitis and Crohn’s disease, as she says that although the conditions aren’t rare, many people don’t talk about it as it can be hard to open up due to the fear of embarrassment.

Recalling the moment that would change her life forever, Mollie wrote on Instagram: “This is a post I hoped I would never have to write. On the 30th of September, I went to the hospital for a checkup and ended up being admitted due to the severity of my symptoms. I didn’t think in a million years my biggest fear was about to come true.

“I have been fighting ulcerative colitis for 8 years and last week it finally won when I had to say goodbye to my colon forever. It is a major 7-hour operation which has scared me since being diagnosed.”

She continued: “It’s been the hardest week of my life but the love I have felt from my friends and family is something I will never forget. All I ask is that if you have any time please educate yourself on Crohn’s and colitis. It affects a huge amount of people and can be very hard to explain and understand.

“It’s going to take a lot of time and strength to adjust to my new life with a stoma bag. It’s important to remember beauty isn’t external and it’s about who you are and how you view things you. All our bodies are beautiful! Please share this and anything you know about IBD to spread as much awareness as possible about this vicious illness. Let’s get you educated! Thank you to everyone for all the love and support. Scars make us strong.”

Taking to social media back in October, Mollie marked three years of having her stoma bag. She posted a photo of herself with it on show next to a pink number 3 balloon and captioned the post: "Happy 3-year stoma-versary Sid. Thanks for giving me my life back."

Speaking about her appearance on BBC show The Traitors, which kicked off on this week, Mollie said she hopes that looking "innocent" and young will help her if she becomes a Traitor.

She said: “I’m quite good at building that relationship but also separating myself in a way which I feel like will be really good in the game". She added: “You have to turn on people at some points, and that person could be your friend in there.”

*The Traitors airs at 9pm on Wednesday, Thursday and Friday nights BBC on BBC1 and BBC iPlayer
