It is well known that Prince William and Prince Harry have had a very strained relationship in recent years, but in his memoir Spare, Harry explosively claimed that things were much worse than people thought, with the relationship absolutely rife with competitiveness.

Harry explores how the origins of the royal brothers' eventual estrangement could even be found in way back in their childhood.

The difficulties in their relationship going on for many years - at least from Harry's point of view - meant that back in 2015 the brothers nearly "came to blows" long before it was publicly acknowledged by either of them that there were issues between them.

On the contrary at that time, the public perception was that the brothers were incredibly close, with Harry often attending engagements with his brother and sister-in-law, Kate, with Harry forming the Royal Foundation with his brother back in 2009 to work on their charitable endeavours.

Harry described the incident in his memoir as encapsulating many of the issues in his relationship with his brother, including the competitiveness that he claimed often reared its head between the 'Heir' and 'Spare'.

Harry had decided that he was keen to deepen his work fighting the climate crisis in Africa, but this quickly became a huge point of contention, with William allegedly declaring that the continent was his "thing" so Harry should back off.

"He had the right to say this, or felt he did, because he was the Heir," Harry wrote. "It was ever in his power to veto my thing, and he had every intention of exercising, even flexing, that veto power."

Harry went on to claim that this turned into a massive row between the brothers, that took place in front of friends they had shared since childhood, during which the pair "almost came to blows".

To Harry, it seemed "all so obvious" that the issue was the competitiveness at the core of their relationship that was the real issue on this occasion, and he wrote that William "cared less about finding his purpose or passion than about winning his lifelong competition with me."

Whilst on that occasion in 2015 things only nearly "came to blows" during the pair's conflict, later in 2019 things became physical between the brothers during a confrontation at Harry's Kensington Palace home - he alleged in his memoir.

Harry claimed that during the incident William insulted his wife and replicated what he perceived to be the same terms the press used about Meghan, before his older brother knocked him to the floor.
