A heated interview between Prince Harry and William left the Duke of Sussex stinging with embarrassment, as he hit back at the "lies" from his sibling.

The two brothers have been known to have a strained relationship for many years. But in Harry's memoir, Spare, he claimed the first seeds were planted for their eventual estrangement many years ago.

For a time in their adulthood, Prince William and Prince Harry shared a home as they both underwent their training to become pilots. And it was this period when they undertook a joint interview with the press - a somewhat rare occurrence for the two young royals.

While they were taking part in the interview, William dealt a savage blow to Harry which left the journalists they were talking to in fits of laughter.

Harry said in his memoir that during the interview, his brother had "griped endlessly about my habits. Harry's a slob, he said, Harry snores," which surprised him, and he wasn't initially sure if William was joking or not.

"I cleaned up after myself, and I didn't snore. Besides our rooms were separated by thick walls, so even if I did snore there was no way he heard. The reporters were in fits of giggles about it all. But I cut in 'Lies! Lies!'"

Harry dismissed William's claims as untrue, but privately believed that the attempt to put him down was due to William being "quietly frustrated" about something.

This interjection only caused more laughter on the part of the journalists and his brother, which eventually led Harry to join in too, "because we often bantered like that, but when I look back I can't help but wonder if there wasn't something else at play."

Over time, Harry admitted, he had begun to think that the jabs about his cleanliness and snoring were actually to do with something else altogether, as William was going through a disheartening experience at the time.

After initially training to go to the front lines - as Harry was - William had been told that because he was heir to the throne the role wouldn't be possible, Harry wrote in his memoir.

Instead, William's training deviated towards becoming a search and rescue pilot, which Harry claimed might have left him "quietly frustrated" that his younger brother had more freedom than he did.

Harry felt that this was such an important job to take on that his brother's frustration was misguided and described the pride he felt at watching William's committed approach to his new role.

However, at the same time, Harry said he knew the feeling of being pulled from a path for which you were preparing yourself personally after his own tour to Iraq was canceled in 2007 after the risks to him and his squadron were deemed "too great".
