A picturesque staycation spot known for its pretty villages and sprawling countryside has been named one of the world's best holiday hotspots for 2024.

UK travel association ABTA have revealed their top picks of this year's best destinations, spanning the likes of Albania, Crete and Aruba but one British destination equally impressed; Shropshire.

The team explained: "A rural delight, yet also the birthplace of the Industrial Revolution. History lovers will want to see Coalbrookdale in the Ironbridge Gorge with its eponymous bridge, the first in the world. For sports lovers it’s pretty Much Wenlock, the site of the first attempt in 1850 to revive the Olympic Games.

"The Shropshire Hills is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty and towns to see include foodie paradise Ludlow, Bridgnorth with a high and low town connected by a funicular, and Bishop’s Castle, with the oldest working brewery in the country. Cheers!"

It's not the only UK destination to have recently impressed travel experts. Just recently the UK's best places to visit in 2024 were revealed, spanning everything from bustling cities to picture-perfect islands that could easily match the Caribbean.

One such spot were the Isles of Scilly, which is no surprise considering earlier they're already amongst rankings of the world's best islands. Sure, the weather may not always be as hot and sunny as the Caribbean, but they still boast white sand beaches with crystal-clear waters, including the spectacular Pentle Bay on the east coast of Tresco, which has been drawing in intrepid explorers for years thanks to its long stretch of sand, low dunes.
