Derek Draper's heroic health battle in full as Kate Garraway announces death
Kate Garraway announced on Friday the death of her beloved husband Derek Draper after a long battle with covid.
The Good Morning Britain presenter had been keeping a vigil by his side as the psychologist and author once again fought for his life in hospital after he suffered a sudden heart attack in December. The 56-year-old had cancelled all upcoming TV and radio work in order to be there for him.
On January 5, Kate released a statement announcing the passing of the former lobbyist. He was surrounded by family 'in his final days'. Along with a picture of him, she posted on social media: "I’m sad to have to tell you all that my darling husband Derek has passed away.
"As some of you may know he has been critically ill following a cardiac arrest in early December which, because of the damage inflicted by Covid in March 2020, led to further complications. Derek was surrounded by his family in his final days and I was by his side holding his hand throughout the last long hours and when he passed.
"I have so much more to say, and of course I will do so in due course, but for now I just want to thank all the medical teams who fought so hard to save him and to make his final moments as comfortable and dignified as possible. Sending so much love and thanks to all of you who have so generously given our family so much support. Rest gently and peacefully now Derek, my love, I was so lucky to have you in my life."

When he first fell ill with symptoms, Kate called Good Morning Britain colleague Dr Hilary Jones for help. At the time, Dr Hilary said: “I had spoken to Derek and I was concerned. I was really concerned just by the way he was speaking and his breathlessness and I told him to do a simple test, not a diagnostic test.
“All I asked him to do was hold his breath and see how long he could hold it for, and it was less than 10 seconds. I said: ‘Okay look, now is the time to call an ambulance’ and this was when he was admitted.”
A few days later, he was placed into a medically-induced coma.
