Shortly after the credits rolled fans took to X, formerly Twitter, to discuss their disgust and outrage. Others made demands about the critically-acclaimed series’ recognition, calling for an award season sweep.
The four-part mini-series , which was sparked by the Post Office's introduction of computer system Horizon in 1999. The accounting programme was rolled out across the country but it wasn't long before sub-postmasters and sub-postmistresses started reporting issues, including Alan Bates, who famously led a class action suit against the Post Office in the 00s.
As the fourth episode came to a close, text appeared on screen that revealed no current or former Post Officer manager has faced a criminal charge, which prompted outrage, seeing over 230 sub-postmasters and sub-postmistresses were jailed after 700 had been prosecuted for theft, fraud and false accounting. Four also killed themselves.

So filled with anger and disgust,” while another echoed, “Having watched Mr Bates v The Post Office I can only share the horror & disgust of so many over this scandalous affair.”

Others said they were “angry” and “in tears. “Mr Bates v The Post Office, it is unbelievable that this scandal has dragged on so long. Tears and anger whilst watching,” penned another social media user, with someone else saying, “Having watched Mr Bates and The Post Office I cannot adequately express how I feel. Swinging between depressing pity and massively frustrating anger.”

One fan simply tweeted: “Mr Bates needs an award!” while another person raved, “Mr Bates vs The Post Office has to be one of the best mini-series I’ve seen on TV for a long time. Great acting. Great production. Great (true) story. Surely it’s going to be on a lot of award shortlists.” Other similar tweets included: “If Mr Bates vs The Post Office doesn't bag multiple TV awards, something went wrong” and “Absolutely brilliant and deserves to be award winning.”
Mr Bates vs The Post Office explores Alan and his partner’s story. In 1998, they used life savings to buy a Post Office branch in Llandudno, North Wales. However, when Alan refused to accept liability like many other postmasters and postmistresses using Horizon, the Post Office terminated their contract with three months' notice.
It meant the couple lost the £65,000 they had invested. Alan went on to set up a campaign for Post Office whistleblowers and eventually, he and five others took the Post Office to the High Court in a Group Litigation Order covering 555 claimants. Judge Mr Justice Fraser ruled computer errors were to blame.
