A jockey is in a critical but stable condition after she was airlifted to hospital with multiple injuries after an horrific incident before a race on Thursday.

Emily Pomfrett, a 34-year-old apprentice rider, was aboard a four-year-old mare Wanta Willow in the parade ring before the fifth race in Brisbane, Australia.

The official stewards report said: “Whilst parading for the running of Race 5, Wanta Willow commenced to become fractious, reared over, and dislodged Apprentice E. Pomfrett.

“Apprentice Pomfrett required immediate medical attention and was tended to by QAS Officers. Due to the requirement for prolonged care and air transport from the track to Brisbane Hospital, Stewards in conjunction with all riders made the decision to discontinue the race-meeting and postponed the remaining 4 races due to the circumstances.”

Pomfrett, a young mother who also works as a horse acupuncturist, was flown to the Princess Alexandra Hospital in nearby Brisbane.

Queensland Jockeys Association boss Glen Prentice told , "The ambulance sedated her at the track before airlifting to PA hospital with suspected sternum, lung and brain injuries, but too early to tell any more.

"She was unconscious for a lengthy period and will be assessed on the flight and once at the PA. Her partner and father are en route to PA." The Australian Jockeys Association said Pomfrett was "in and out of consciousness".

A later text from Luke Miller, Pomfrett's partner, released by broadcaster Steve Hewlett said: "Emily has a small bleed to the brain but they are not concerned about that, they will keep her in ICU overnight and attempt to wake her in the morning if all goes well tonight."
