Freezing temps have battered Brits this winter, and it doesn't look like the sun is coming out anytime soon.

As energy bills continue to rise, it can be hard to keep the house warm without breaking the bank. But being overly cautious with the heating could result in damp homes that allow mould to grow. It's a catch 22 situation many of us are trapped in.

However, if you've spotted a slightly pink-ish stain on your surfaces (most likely to show in the shower) whacking the temperature up won't make a difference. This is because 'pink mould' is not actually mould at all - it's a buildup of bacteria.

Cleaning expert and owner of The Big Clean Co has posted a video on Instagram about 'pink mould', urging viewers to wash their showers regularly. "Pink mould is not actually mould at all, it's bacteria," she captioned the post. "The build up of it on your shower can cause infections."

People often mistake pink mould for a build-up of products including shampoo and conditioner as it has a similar slimy feel and grows like a film rather than spores. It is less dangerous than black mould but can still cause issues such as urinary tract infections (UTIs) as well as digestive problems.

It can lead to pneumonia in rare cases - and can cause infections if the bacteria (officially known as Serratia Marcescensor) if it touches cuts or broken skin. Luckily, the nasty stuff can be easily removed.

In fact, many over the counter products such as bleach should get rid of the bacteria - but a grout cleaner may be needed for more stubborn stains. If using bleach or strong cleaning products, it is advised to wear gloves and ensure the room is well ventilated.

One user raved about Cillit Bang's Black Mould Remover - arguing it worked much more effectively than bleach. Simply spray the solution onto the affected area and leave for 15 minutes for wiping off. You can buy a 750ml bottle of the cleaner for just £3.65 on Amazon.
