Manchester United need something special to kick-start their painful campaign.

United are seventh in the Premier League and an alarming nine points behind Arsenal in fourth after their latest defeat. Erik ten Hag's side, who are already out of Europe, were beaten 2-1 by Nottingham Forest at the City Ground in their most recent outing.

Yet the transfer window is now open, giving Ten Hag the opportunity to bring in reinforcements. The United boss won't have much money to spend this month, but it's hoped they can bring in one or two players and get rid of some deadwood within the squad. With that in mind, here are the latest transfer headlines from Old Trafford...

Regulion's time is up

Sergio Reguilon has returned to parent club Tottenham. United signed the 27-year-old left-back on a season-long loan in August after losing Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia to injury. The deal included a break clause in January, one which has now been activated.

Reguilon made 12 appearances for United during his loan spell, with the right-footed Diogo Dalot often preferred at left-back. United's decision to cut Regulion's loan spell short gives the defender the entire month to find another club, if Spurs let him leave again.

United have opened contract talks with Shola Shoretire, according to the Manchester Evening News. They want the 19-year-old winger to sign a new long-term deal before allowing him to complete a loan spell and gain valuable first-team experience.

It's believed clubs in the Championship are lining up to sign Shoretire, who made 16 League One appearances for Bolton during a loan spell last season. The teenager hasn't played a first-team game for United this season, having made his debut in February 2021.

United make Onana breakthrough

Ten Hag is hopeful of having first-choice goalkeeper Andre Onana available for United's clash against Tottenham at Old Trafford on January 14, despite his involvement in the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations tournament. That's according to the Daily Mail.

Onana has been selected in Cameroon's squad for the competition, with their first game against Guinea taking place in Yamoussoukro on January 15. The stopper is concerned about losing his spot at United to deputy Altay Bayindir while the AFCON is ongoing.

It's claimed Onana wants to play against Tottenham and take a seven-hour flight to the Ivory Coast immediately after the game to play the next day. If Onana's request is approved by the relevant governing bodies, he might not miss any United games at all.

United aren't back in Premier League action until February 1 thanks to the winter break, with Cameroon's final group game against Gambia scheduled for January 23. Yet Onana will miss the Premier League fixtures against Wolves, West Ham and Aston Villa if Cameroon reach the final in Abidjan on February 11.
