'My kids and I take my husband's ashes everywhere we go'
Appearing in high spirits in her latest Instagram upload, Mel shared her story as she said: "My body was quite literally screaming at me for attention and I wasn't listening." The Australian TV star also said the stomach pains felt as though she was in 'labour' and it got so bad that she had to take a break from filming Married At First Sight while she was back on her home turf Down Under.
When the pain got substantially worse, Mel said she finally decided to see a GP, but they unfortunately misdiagnosed her, telling her that the symptoms she was experiencing were simply down to 'constipation.' However, Mel said she knew deep down that something was really wrong when she was flying back to the UK, when she physically unable to eat any of the plane food - something which she joked she always looked forward to.
"I consider myself a bit of a foodie in fact," Mel explained. "Eating is my my great pleasures in life and so for me to be sitting on a plane being offered things like scrambled eggs and smoked salmon and champagne - all of my favourite things...And to be turning them down and thinking well ''I just don’t even want a cup of tea''. - that was a warning sign for me."
The much-loved TV star ended the informative video by thanking her fans for their support, and urged followers to prioritise their health in 2024. Alongside the video, she added the caption: "Happy New Year. I recorded this video to start sharing my bowel cancer journey with you. I’ve tried to answer many of the questions you’ve asked and to offer some thoughts on getting better at health management in 2024."
"I’m not an expert, just a person going through an experience like many of you. I’m learning as I go and if you’d like, I’ll take you along on the journey with me. Let’s learn together."
