A man who asked his wife to stop one of her habits while they were out at dinner has been defended online after the woman screamed at him and stormed out of the restaurant.

The anonymous man explained his wife has an infatuation with stuffed animals and has been collecting them for years. The man has even bought several of them for her - including one that she loves above all others - a foot tall pig wearing pyjamas. The woman brings the stuffed pig with her everywhere, including to restaurants, where she demands her porky pal gets his own chair at their table.

The man admitted he thought his wife's habit was a bit silly, but said it "wasn't hurting anyone" so he decided to keep his mouth shut on the matter. But, when his wife brought the stuffed pig with her to an "upscale" restaurant the pair visited, the looks of judgement from fellow diners became too hard for him to ignore.

In a post on Reddit, he said: "I had a crazy day at work and was a bit tired, and I noticed quite a few people glancing in our direction. So, I asked her if she could sometimes maybe just leave the stuffy at home. She said OK, but after thinking about it for a couple of minutes she became very angry, shouted 'why, do I embarrass you!?' and stormed out of the place, which then became silent.

When I got home she was still fuming and felt personally attacked by my request. I tried explaining myself but it basically ended by her saying she'd bring it anywhere she damn well pleased. I didn't push it further because I didn't think it was worth fighting over more, and didn't bring it up again."

The habit has since continued, and the man has become unsure whether he was right to ask her to leave the stuffed animal at home. But some commenters on the post were quick to defend him, as one wrote: "Your wife shouldn't bring a really big stuffed animal around that's strange. Maybe convince her to bring a smaller one around that she keeps in her purse or something."

Others, however, criticised him for calling out his wife. Someone said: "Sorry but you're the a**hole just for how you dealt with it in public. Maybe she just gets a giant kick out of it. People get way too caught up with policing other people's joy. Fun matters, joy matters. Encourage what brings people you love joy, and forget random judgmental strangers."
