Max Verstappen has been untouchable among his Formula 1 peers for the last two years - but his team boss insists he doesn't act like it.

This year alone the Dutchman smashed a swathe of single-season records en-route to his third consecutive drivers' title. And he also secured third place on the all-time list of drivers who have won the most races, aged just 26.

Red Bull team principal Christian Horner is, obviously, delighted with the results his star man produced this year. And he's even more impressed with how Verstappen comports himself away from the track and the TV cameras.

"I think the way he has delivered the performance has been exceptional," he told Mirror Sport . "What we're witnessing with him is something that doesn't come along very often. Of course, he has to be at one with the team and there has to be a total trust, and we have that.

"The team has incredible strength in depth and that's what has enabled us to deliver these results. Max is a generational talent and what he's done... to think he has surpassed 50 Grand Prix victories at just 26 years of age and when you look at the amount of victories he has had over the last three seasons, it's quite outstanding.

"There are no airs and graces to him. He walks into the garage and there's always a bit of banter with the boys in there. He's just one of the guys and I think that's what everybody loves and really appreciates about him. You know he's going to give you 110 percent but he's not a diva, he just gets into the car, delivers and just sees himself as part of the team."

Horner's words line up with what one of Verstappen's engineers said about the racer. Speaking on the Sky Sports F1 podcast, Calum Nicholas gave insight into what it's like to work so closely with the Dutchman.

He said: "I've always thought it’s odd to me that people can't see sometimes how brilliant he is. For me, when he's in the garage, when he's not in a race car, he's one of us, he really is. He engages with us just as you'd want any of your other colleagues to engage with you. He's kind, he cares about the people around him, it's brilliant.

"I like the fact that he can get into the car and close his lid, and then he should be ruthless. You're a sportsperson. We're here to win. He's here to win. And I think it's great that he's able to switch between the both. And he really does.

" It's just it seems to be his nature that he will just chase every last bit - he will leave nothing on the table. It's great to have. It puts the pressure on us to make sure that we deliver, which is great. The nature of the people in the garage, we thrive on that pressure. We want to be the best every single week."
