A mum has insisted she won't be attending her family's Christmas celebrations after her sister-in-law handmade a stocking for her son - and purposefully put the wrong name on it.

The anonymous woman explained she's currently expecting her first child with her husband, who already has a nine-year-old son from a previous marriage. The couple are set to welcome a baby boy, and while the mum has settled on a name she likes, her husband's sister is demanding she call the little one Tommy.

This year, the mum-to-be and her husband have been invited to have Christmas dinner with his side of the family at his sister's house, and at first, the woman was happy to be part of the celebrations. However, she has recently discovered her sister-in-law has made embroidered stockings for all the children of the family, including her unborn son, but there's just one problem - the stocking says Tommy on it.

In a post on Reddit, the mum explained: To preface, I have been with my husband Todd for three years. He has a son from his late wife. Todd is pretty close to his sister Monica. Their mum is deceased and Monica has basically taken over. She's nice to me and all but she seems to be a bit controlling especially when it comes to Todd.

"That wasn't a real issue until after I got pregnant. After we found the gender of the baby (boy) she insisted on the name 'Tommy' but I refused because I already had a name in mind, and Todd loves it, but he chose to stay out of the fight saying maybe we should just let Monica call him Tommy. I refused and asked her to please respect me and the fact that I'm the mum, not her, and she said okay.

"She's hosting Christmas for the family this year and invited me and Todd to Christmas dinner. I was intending on coming - that is until I discovered that she hung stockings with her kids', nephews', and nieces' names and hung a 'Tommy' stocking for my son. I was livid. I lost it on her and there was a huge fight. I told her I wouldn't be coming to her Christmas dinner if she didn't remove the stocking or put the real name and then I left."

After storming out, the mum was confronted by her husband who "yelled" at her and said she was "ruining an important family tradition" by refusing to attend the Christmas dinner. He told her she was "overreacting", but she stood her ground and said she wouldn't go to the dinner unless her sister-in-law removed the stocking.

She added: "Her husband Philip - who's usually nice to me - called yesterday saying that he spoke with Todd and he'd be devastated if I caused 'the family' to miss the event at Monica's house and ruin it not only for the adults but for the kids as well since my stepson loves spending the holidays with his cousins."

Commenters on the post were largely on the mum's side though, with many saying her husband was in the wrong for not having her back over the situation. One person said: "Stick to your guns on this. DO NOT let them bully you. You have no reason to be ashamed. They all should be ashamed including your spineless husband! Insist the stocking is removed and replaced with one with your baby's real name. She is being rude and disrespectful."

While another added: "You are not the one ruining Christmas. It is funny how you can't tell your sister-in-law what to do but they are more than happy to tell you want to do. You are not overreacting, not only should they be removing the Tommy stocking but you deserve a good apology as well."
