Ginger Nut loving donkey rescued by firefighters after getting stuck in drain

A Ginger Nut-loving donkey had to be rescued by firefighters armed with biscuits after it got stuck in a muddy drain.

Firefighters worked to free the stricken animal on Saturday afternoon, and once they were able to get it out of the drain, soothed its worries with some Ginger Nut biscuits in Co Antrim.

In a heartwarming post on the NIFRS North Facebook page, the fire service said: “At 1305 hrs this afternoon, Antrim On-Call crew attended an incident involving a donkey stuck in a drain. Using manual handling techniques and improvisation the crew successfully rescued the donkey. Well done to all.”

Pictures show the shell-shocked animal, half of its white fur soaked and muddy, as it lays down safe amongst its rescuers, as one firefighter feeds it the popular biscuit. To get it out the drain, where it had ended up overturned, rescuers fixed a harness around its body and were able to lift it out, BelfastLive reported.

They used a digger to lift the small animal up and out, supervising it the entire way. The relieved looking animal was pictured after the rescue, safe on firm land.
