A young girl had to be rushed into emergency surgery after she accidentally swallowed a Cadbury's chocolate wrapper which got stuck in her lungs.

The child, aged 8, from India, was left suffering from pneumonia and a dry cough, after the mishap, but didn't realise that she had actually digested the wrapper until later on. Doctors were initially left puzzled when a CT scan and antibiotics failed to pick up find the root cause of her condition. However, after undergoing a bronchoscopy at Aakash Hospital in Delhi, medics discovered that the thin sheet of aluminium foil had become lodged in her lungs on December 9.

Dr. Akshay Buddharaja, a doctor at the facility, explained that symptoms of pneumonia often appear if a foreign object is breathed in. Doctors used an endoscopic camera in a procedure called argon plasma coagulation to remove the wrapper. Once it was removed, the girl's symptoms started to get better and she is now said to be "completely fine".

Earlier this year, a woman said she swallowed a metal screw which was reportedly hidden inside a treat that she found at her work. Mónica Navarrete, who was on the night shift for fruit exporters Frusan, in Chile, decided to munch on the bread that had been left on the table but immediately started choking. Chicken and vegetables had also been laid out as snacks by the workplace.

She explained: “A colleague helped me when I ran out of breath. I was choking and then I felt something scrape down my throat. At work, they told me to call home and see if someone could pick me up. After a lot of complaining, they took me to hospital and they didn’t even drop me at the entrance – I had to walk two blocks.” After she arrived at the hospital, located in Angol, Araucanía Region, an X-ray identified that a one-inch screw had passed through her stomach and had reached her colon. She was able to pass the screw a few days later with a level of discomfort in hospital.

The Mirror previously reported how a woman accidently swallowed one of her AirPods after mistaking it for an ibuprofen tablet. TikTok star Carli B, @iamcarliiib, said she picked up the packet of painkillers and a glass of water whilst she had her headphones in her hands. The TikToker said she threw back the supposed tablet and swallowed it with the drink but realised after that she had made a major mishap. She decided to record a voice note to tell her friend what she had done.

Providing an update of the mistake, she said at the time: "I have some updates - so I had an X-ray done a few hours ago and it revealed that the AirPod had passed. I had a feeling that it had but I just wanted to make sure. I did not retrieve it but I know that it’s passed and I know that it was in my stomach and no longer is and I know this from a very hilarious way. Before I disconnected the AirPod from my phone I played the ‘find my AirPod’ sound and faintly heard it from my stomach."
