Fast-food fans have been left in shock after a former McDonald's corporate chef shared what really goes into the brand’s much-loved McRib. Profiled on the fast food giant’s website, McDonald’s describes its offering as: “Seasoned boneless pork dipped in a tangy BBQ sauce, topped with slivered onions and dill pickles, all served on a toasted homestyle bun. When everything combines you have BBQ pork sandwich perfection.”

But the chef, known as @chefmikeharacz on the social media site, was keen to answer his followers questions about what exactly went in it to make it so Mc-tasty. He said: “People have been asking me to disclose what’s in the McRib patty. What are all the filler ingredients? Well, I’m here to tell you.”

After telling his TikTok followers he has been on the McDonalds website to look at the ingredient statement, he said the list might take him some time. “Number one is pork, two is water, three is salt, four is dextrose (sweetener) and five is rosemary extract.” With even the former chef shocked he continued: “That’s it! Only five ingredients.”

He went on to say that he knew people would be asking what kind of pork was used, before telling them: “What do you think the ground meat industry is using? Whole pork tenderloins to grind into them? No. They are using scraps, using trims, offcuts from trimming up a pork butt,” he said, clarifying that that was the case for the entire industry, not just McDonald’s.

His followers were quick to respond to his video, with one saying: “Meanwhile the sauce has 18 listed ingredients and the bun has 20…” Another refuted his claim they used scraps, commenting: “They’re not using scrap pork, it’s the shoulder and front leg. I worked at Tysons and used to do them.”

Another agreed saying they used to work at the plant that made the patties: “The pork used was beautiful cuts of pork and shoulders with some trimming.” Some comments were tongue in cheek, with one viewer saying: ” I was really craving one until you told me it wasn’t that unhealthy,” and other cheekily adding: “And super glue to bind the scraps together?”
