Arsenal boss Arteta details FA meeting after escaping punishment over outburst

Mikel Arteta has praised an independent regulatory commission for choosing not to punish him for his angry tirade about the Newcastle VAR controversy.

The Arsenal manager was charged with misconduct by the FA after describing the decision to allow Anthony Gordon’s goal to stand as "embarrassing" and a "disgrace". Newcastle picked up a 1-0 win in the Premier League game on November 4, with a lengthy VAR check letting Joelinton ’s push on Gabriel Magalhaes go.

Arteta was charged with misconduct by the FA for using comments that were "insulting towards match officials and/or detrimental to the game and/or bring the game into disrepute.” But in a meeting this week, an independent commission found the charge to be unproven after agreeing it was not Arteta's intention to insult the match officials.

“I think it was a really good, well-run process,” Arteta said in a press conference on Friday to preview Arsenal’s Premier League game against Brighton on Sunday. “It gave the opportunity for both of us to say how we felt. I think we have to draw a line now and look at how we can be more constructive. I felt a lot of sympathy to be fair as I explained the pressure we feel as managers and how important details are.

“The reality was that 14 managers lost their jobs and we depend on results. When the outcome is that important we depend on it. I think it was a really good process.”

Asked if he would say the same things again, he replied: “In life that’s too easy. What would I have done if I knew. It was done. I defended my opinion. I’m fully supportive of how we have to improve the game. We have the duty to do that. It’s good to discuss things in an open way.”

Asked if he felt the charge was fair, he said: “I think we have a huge duty. It’s part of our job and our role to represent ourselves in the best way every day.”

Speaking after defeat at Newcastle, Arteta had said: "It is embarrassing, it’s an absolute disgrace, that’s what it is: a disgrace. There’s so much at stake, we’ve put in so many hours to compete at the highest level and you cannot imagine the amount of messages we’ve had saying this cannot continue.

“It’s not acceptable, there’s too much at stake. I don’t want to be in the hands of these people. I don’t know how to feel. I’m wasting my time, we are wasting our time. It’s difficult enough to compete against Newcastle – they are a really good team, but we have to talk about how the hell this goal stood. It’s an absolute disgrace it was allowed.”

Arteta will be back on the touchline for the Brighton game at the Emirates Stadium on Sunday after serving a one-game touchline ban for picking up a third yellow card of the season for his behaviour in the aftermath of Declan Rice’s 97th-minute winner against Luton.

He recently suggested he would try harder to rein in his emotions. “Sometimes when I look at myself and I’m so agitated I think it can sometimes give an image that is not the best, mainly for the club,” he said. “Sometimes it’s difficult with the certain decision when you are in the heat, because you are representing the club and you want to defend them.”
