A mum has been told to eat her Christmas dinner "from a plate like a normal person" after serving a whole family roast on kebab sticks.

Brits love their roast dinners and can be protective when anyone tries to mess with the famous meal. One 35-year-old woman has sent roast fans into meltdown after coming with a unique way to cook her roast in a bid to avoid long cooking times and cut costs.

Katie Fox, from Barnsley, South Yorkshire, rustled up the hearty tea by cooking pigs in blankets, roast spuds, carrots, sprouts, stuffing balls and Yorkshire puddings and serving them on metal BBQ skewers. The business owner, who runs personalised gift company Made by Foxy, then drizzled the 10-inch spikes in gravy before they were gobbled down by the hungry quartet.

But the mouth-watering spread has faced some backlash from some roast dinner lovers who brand skewering the meal a "pointless exercise" claiming she should "just stick it on the bloody plate".

Katie opted not to include turkey to avoid making it a more costly and time-consuming cooking exercise. Minus the traditional bird, Katie says the festive feast was a bargain especially as she was able to snap up the pigs in blankets for £2 and veg for just 20p a pop from Lidl - meaning it cost less than £7 for four people.

Defending her roast on a stick, Katie said: "It was snowing at the start of December and we wanted to have a Christmassy night in. I just wanted to make it a little bit special for the girls. We went to B&M and got some hot chocolate packs and some baking stuff and it snowballed from there.

"I just decided 'let's do some Christmas dinner skewers' and it went from there. I had the idea that I was going to do them when I went to Lidl. I don't really know where it came from, it just happened. I was surprised at how cheap it was, Lidl had the festive veg on cheap.",

Speaking about costs, the mum added: "It was 20p for sprouts, 20p for carrots - everybody's always got potatoes in [so I didn't need to buy any]. You're looking at £2 for your pigs in blankets, stuffing is 45p. I'm from Yorkshire so of course I made the Yorkshire Puddings.

"I was trying to keep costs down, which is probably the reason why there's not turkey on it. It also takes ages to cook. The meal costs less than £7 for four people. What surprised us though was we all had two skewers each and we were full. We didn't realise how much was actually on it because it we just saw it as a snack but it definitely wasn't."

Using a dual air fryer, the savvy mum was able to speedily cook pigs in blankets alongside crispy roast potatoes while boiling sprouts and carrots and cooking Yorkshire puddings and stuffing in the oven. Katie said putting the meal together as a family was a fun experience and is something she'd definitely do again when she has friends over for "shock value".

Katie said: "The fun part was making them. My niece and her friend were doing the veg, then they were passing them to me and I was putting the potatoes on, it was just a fun thing to do. You eat it like you'd eat a chicken sewer, by putting the skewer in your mouth.

"You've got to think about the psychology of it - you're eating a Christmas dinner off a skewer, it's weird but it really went well. One minute you've got your Yorkshire pudding, the next you're having your sprouts, it was lovely, really nice."

The mum says she is planning on making the skewers again this Christmas as they only takes 45 minutes to make. "I'd do it again 100% if I was having a get-together just for the shock factor, which is a good talking point if you're having people round," Katie added.

Katie shared her creation on Facebook where it went viral racking up more than 2,700 likes, shares and comments - with people split over it being skewered. Katie said: "I was surprised at how much backlash the post didn't get over the Yorkshires.

"I was very surprised that nobody noticed there was no turkey. One girl pointed it out and I replied 'finally someone noticed'. I do pride myself on my dinners, especially my roasts it's a staple in our house on a Sunday.

"I was relieved that people thought it was a good idea but I was also entertained by the backlash. For me that was a fun night. It was something to do in the evening as a family to enjoy the festive period. If people want to put a Christmas dinner on skewers, let them put a Christmas dinner on skewers."

One person commented: "Pointless exercise this." Another wrote: "Exactly my thought just stick it on a bloody plate." One wrote: "Unpopular opinion maybe, but…Yorkshire puddings don't belong on a Christmas dinner!"

Another commented: "What's the point [of] this wouldn't u just eat your dinner on a plate like a normal person... trying to make Xmas dinner like street food .. STOP IT." Others were more supportive of the presentation.

One wrote: "What an ace idea!" Another commented: "Ok so this is genius." Another wrote: "Looks lush!!"
