Graham Potter would likely be willing to replace Erik ten Hag as Manchester United manager.

The Englishman has reportedly met with Sir Jim Ratcliffe, with the billionaire closing in on a deal for a 25 percent stake in the club. Ratcliffe is set to instigate a major overhaul at the Premier League giants once he does arrive at Old Trafford, with Ten Hag's job under threat.

The Dutchman has endured a wretched season in charge, seeing his side finish rock bottom of the Champions League and already lose seven top-flight games. That form is not something Ratcliffe is likely to stand for as he bids to get United back on track.

The billionaire appears to be sounding out potential replacements for Ten Hag even before he takes over football matters at United. According to The Sun, Ratcliffe recently met with Potter, with the former Chelsea boss his preferred option to take over.

That is an approach that Potter would appear to be open to taking up. Earlier this week, he rejected the opportunity to replace Alex Neil in charge of Championship strugglers Stoke City.

It is said that he instead is waiting for a 'major job' to come up, rather than dropping down into the second tier. United would certainly suit his requirements, despite their tough season, with Ten Hag's side still sitting in the top six.

Potter's last spell in management came last season at Chelsea, where he endured a disastrous 31 games in charge. He won 12 and those 11 of the games before being sacked, with Frank Lampard replacing him on an interim basis.

While Potter may be keen on taking on the role at United, Ten Hag will not give it up without a fight. The Dutchman launched a defence of his reign and his team following the defeat to Bayern Munich on Tuesday.

“There's still many things to play for. And now we can focus, of course, on the Premier League and this is the level we want to play, Champions League. So, we have to give every effort in to be in the top four so, next year, we are back in the Champions League," he said.

"Then, of course, the FA Cup [starts in January]. So, there’s still many things to play for. I look to my team and, yeah, we had opportunities in games and we were in winning positions. I think we scored many goals.

"But then also, we have to see we gave it away sometimes by individual errors, but by not one player, but by more players and not every time the same. So, we gave the opponent opportunities to return.

"But if you assess that, also we had very good spells in such games but we have to do better. And the facts are we have not enough points. So, that is of course disappointing. We are disappointed as a group, and as a manager I’m disappointed. We should have done better.”
