Erik ten Hag has admitted that Sergio Reguilon could be back at Tottenham in January due to a 'break clause' in his contract.

The Spaniard signed a season-long loan deal at Manchester United in September, after Ten Hag was hit by injuries to favoured left-backs Luke Shaw and Tyrell Malacia. The 26-year-old has been himself forced to miss games through injury and illness since arriving at Old Trafford, but has managed 10 club appearances.

Shaw has now returned to action following a muscular problem, with Malacia nearing full fitness after his own lengthy lay-off due to a knee problem. That has left Reguilon's future at the club in doubt, although he started the home defeat with Bournemouth on Saturday.

It proved a harrowing afternoon for Ten Hag's side, turning in an inept display as they were beaten 3-0 by the Cherries. And prior to the game the Dutch manager admitted the former Real Madrid man's future was up in the air.

After revealing the 'break clause', he told reporters “We have to make a final decision on Reguilon. But also there is Spurs who are involved in that conversation as well.”

In the absence of Reguilon, Destiny Udogie has become established as the No.1 left back under Ange Postecoglou. But the Australian's squad is currently plagued by a huge injury list, and the prospect of more squad depth is bound to appeal.

HAVE YOUR SAY! Will Erik ten Hag be sacked before Christmas? Comment below.

Reguilon joined the senior set-up at Real in 2018, but after 14 La Liga appearances was loaned to Sevilla the following season. There he won the Europa League, before moving to North London to play for Jose Mourinho in September 2020.

But after two years he was back on loan in Spain, this time with Atletico Madrid. He duly returned in the summer only to then join United, with that deal now potentially being cut short.

Ten Hag is currently mulling over a host of possible departures in January. Jadon Sancho is expected to leave the club following his first-team exile while both Rafael Varane and Donny van de Beek have been linked with moves away.
