Jamie Carragher claims Pep Guardiola's dig shows he's "terrified" of Roy Keane

Jamie Carragher has joked that Pep Guardiola is scared of Roy Keane following a war of words between the pundit and Manchester City manager.

Guardiola called out Carragher in a remarkable six-minute monologue following criticism of his stuttering City side. Things got personal when Guardiola brought up the fact that Carragher never won the Premier League with Liverpool during his playing days.

Carragher shot back with a post on Twitter which read: "I think I'd have probably won one if Liverpool were owned by a nation state, and pushed the rules so far that the Premier League charged us 115 times!!" Guardiola also name-checked Carragher’s Sky Sports colleagues Gary Neville and Micah Richards in his impassioned defence of his side, but left out Keane – a fact which hasn’t gone unnoticed.

“The only thing, as well, I noticed is he must be terrified of [Roy Keane]. He didn’t mention Roy, did he?” Carragher joked on the Stick to Football podcast.

He added: “[Pep Guardiola] obviously said what he said [about me] in the press conference and it was one for the papers that comes out at 10:30pm at night, but I was sent it an hour or two before. I knew it was coming, but I thought it was that siege mentality – have a go at someone, he said something about the crowd last week.

“If you go back to this time last year – I don’t know if it was the same sort of time – but [Manchester City] played Tottenham at home. They were getting beat 2-0 and then they won 4-2, and he came out and had a bit of a go at people. It feels to me like he’s a little bit worried about Arsenal, the fact that he’s done that and he feels he needs to give everyone a kick up the backside.”

City have now gone four Premier League games without a win, drawing with Chelsea, Liverpool and Tottenham before suffering defeat at Aston Villa on Wednesday. They have dropped down to fourth place, but Guardiola insisted earlier this week that he’s not concerned.

“We have to do much better,” he said. “Try not to concede [so many] goals. But my feeling today is we're going to win the Premier League. People don't believe it already, after three draws, but we feel we're going to do it again - knowing that it is not easy because no team has done it yet [won four in a row].

“The difficulty is there and was last season, but if you ask me today what I'm feeling, we're going to do it again. Except for the Chelsea game, the rest of the games were similar [in terms of conceding goals], even lower than last season when we won the Treble.

“The reality is we have conceded a lot of goals and we have to get better. When you concede goals in every game it is difficult to sustain. We don't have many chances conceded so hopefully we can continue with that because that is a good sign.”
