The icy mornings aren't going anywhere, and defrosting the car in freezing temps is never a fun way to start the day.

Using items like your credit card or an old CD to chip the frost off can cause lasting damage to your car, and could result in a hefty fee to get it fixed. But, if you're sick of using a scraper, and can't afford to wait 15 minutes for the car to warm, there is a simple solution.

Not only does it cost as little as 50p, but you probably already have the kitchen staple in your home.

Experts at Leasecar.co.uk say the most basic type of table salt is a godsend for tackling frost. Simply pour some water into a spray bottle and add one tablespoon of salt per two cups of water, then spray it onto your windscreen.

"This will dissolve the ice with a chemical reaction rather than melting it with heat," the experts explained, adding: "The ions in salt also lower the freezing point of water, making it difficult for it to refreeze. Apply the solution sparingly, as heavy application could damage the glass."

If you want to prevent frost from forming on your car in the first place, another kitchen staple could help you. Experts recommend rubbing half an onion across the surface the night before if you want to wake up to an iceless car.

If you don't have any onions, or don't want your car to have a questionable smell as you pull into work, creating a mixture of water and vinegar and spraying it on your windshield should also keep the frost at bay.

And, if you have any spare vodka to hand, you can use it to melt frozen surfaces. It may be an expensive method, but it sure is effective.

When a Mirror writer tried out the hack, they said: "I definitely would use this hack again, especially if I had to rush off in the morning. It's best to do this when you've already used onions, so have some scraps to hand.

"Interestingly, potatoes will also work under the same concept, so anyone who can't bear the thought of an onion smell in their car might want to give that a go instead."
