Aldi to slash price of Christmas vegetables to 15p kicking off price war

Aldi has announced the return of its Christmas food discounts, which will see vegetables being sold for as little as 15p this year.

The supermarket chain announced today that from Monday, December 18 until Sunday, December 24, Aldi shoppers will benefit from the Super 6 Deals price cuts.

Vegetables included in the festive deal are 1kg of carrots, 2kg of white potatoes and a 500g bag of parsnips. Also available as part of the offer will be Aldi’s red and white cabbages, brussels sprouts sold in 500g packs, and swedes. The bags of white potatoes will be priced at 15p, while the other vegetables will be 19p each.

Aldi says this year's promotions come as research revealed that one in three or 35% of Brits are worried about the cost of Christmas this year. The supermarket chain says the price slashes will help families keep the costs down this festive season.

Alongside this, Aldi says the deals this year do not come at the cost of the supplier. This means that growers receive the same price for their product no matter the promotion or offer in-store.

Last year, several supermarkets joined in to slash the price of their vegetables in the lead up to Christmas. With Aldi introducing this offer, it can only be expected that other supermarket chains will announce price cuts in the coming few weeks.

The news comes after Aldi was crowned the UK's cheapest supermarket chain for November by Which? consumer champions. Each month Which? compares the price of a basket of goods from each of the major UK supermarkets.

Last month, a basket of 47 items at Aldi was found to cost £76.77. Fellow German discounter Lidl was close behind however with a basket price of just 79p more at £77.56. Aldi held on to the title for 16 consecutive months. However, in October 2023 Lidl stole the crown and put a stop to Aldi's run.
