Manchester United players were left fed up and "angry" with Jadon Sancho as a result of his penchant for showing up late, Nemanja Matic has admitted.

Sancho, 23, joined United in the summer of 2021 in a £73million deal from Borussia Dortmund but has struggled to replicate his dazzling Bundesliga form in the Premier League. The former Manchester City youngster has managed just 12 goals in 82 appearances for the Red Devils and is currently out of favour.

United manager Erik ten Hag has taken drastic action with Sancho after a public fallout back in September. The winger has even been exiled by the Dutchman in recent weeks - but his poor timekeeping was causing a stir long before Ten Hag's arrival.

Matic, who spent five years at Manchester United after leaving Chelsea, revealed that he took action against players such as Sancho and Paul Pogba for showing up late.

Matic told Austrian outlet YuPlanet: "At Chelsea, players acted professionally. They were punctual and were never late for training. But at United it happened almost every day.

"Among the players who would always be late were Paul Pogba and Jadon Sancho, and a couple of other players. The rest of us who were always on time were angry so we decided to form a kind of an internal disciplinary committee with me serving as its president.

"I put a sheet of paper up on the wall where I documented the names of individuals arriving late. During one particular season, we collected around £75,000 in fines. We had planned to use the money to throw a party in London but we didn't due to the Covid outbreak."

Since Matic departed United last summer, Sancho's stock has fallen significantly. He remains unavailable for selection after disputing claims made by Ten Hag via his social media account back in September.

The forward has also refused to apologise to his manager, who has subsequently taken the step of banishing Sancho from all first-team areas of the club's training ground. He continues to train alone ahead of the January transfer window.

It remains to be seen if Sancho will leave United in the New Year but it seems unlikely Ten Hag will attempt to reintegrate him anytime soon. Numerous clubs, including Dortmund and teams from the Saudi Pro League, have been credited with an interest in Sancho's services.
