Pochettino can't hide his true feelings after being asked about Man Utd snub

Mauricio Pochettino made it clear that he's fully focused on Chelsea's current plight than the narrative surrounding him and Manchester United ahead of his trip to Old Trafford on Wednesday night.

Pochettino, 51, has been heavily linked with the United vacancy on more than one occasion since leaving Tottenham back in 2019 and was believed to be in line for the role before the United hierarchy opted to prise Erik ten Hag away from Ajax last summer.

Ahead of Chelsea's Premier League meeting with United in midweek, Pochettino was asked about those links and whether or not he was relieved to have missed out on the job given the immense pressure Ten Hag is currently under.

He was reluctant to entertain such talk, though, and is more concerned with the project he's currently overseeing at Stamford Bridge. He told reporters on Tuesday: "I'm not going to talk about it. You laugh but you try to make me talk too much, I don't want to make a mistake.

"I am not the person to talk what is going on at different clubs. I am happy here in this project. We are dealing with many situations we need to improve also.

"Maybe if someone sees the project from outside maybe they thing we need advice from the outside. We are building something here and 200 per cent focused on evolving and developing the project we want together. That is my focus to try and deliver the job."

Like United, Chelsea have endured some indifferent results this season. The Blues are in the midst of a rebuild under Pochettino, who took up the reins following a turbulent 2022/23 campaign.

Manchester United are three places and five points ahead of Chelsea in the Premier League table ahead of their meeting on Wednesday but the pressure is on the hosts to get a result following poor results against Newcastle and Galatasaray last week.

However, Pochettino insisted the current situation at the club does not necessarily mean it's the perfect time to play them. He added: "Always it's good to play at Old Trafford because it's an amazing place, stadium, fans, team, club. It's a great opportunity always to play there but I think we are all in similar levels with different situations.

"I don't say that it is a good moment to go there. The most important is to feel ready to compete because we are going to face a team that is going to be tough because they want to win and we want to keep our momentum and build from Brighton and be higher in the table. It's important for us to be in a different position. It's a game that we need to go there and try to win."
