CosMc's is a new concept from McDonalds that may see lots of new coffee and drink options

McDonald's is about to launch a mysterious new spin-off named CosMc's, with its first restaurant set to open in Illinois.

The fast-food giant has so far kept mum on what the menu will offer, but local resident Scott Fredrickson managed to snap a photo of the menu screens during testing.

They displayed a variety of teas, lemonades, sandwiches, soft serve ice cream, and baked goods - though it's unclear if this is the final menu or just a test run.

The soon-to-be-opened CosMc's restaurant is located in Bolingbrook, Illinois, attached to an existing McDonald's outlet. The location was likely chosen due to its proximity to McDonald's global headquarters in Chicago.

CosMcs, named after a vintage McDonald's alien mascot, sports vibrant yellow and purple branding and seems to be heavily focused on drive-thru service.

There are rumours that CosMc's might be a competitor for Starbucks, offering coffee and snacks similar to those at McDonald's McCafe. Fans are also hoping to see international McDonald's favourites on the menu.

McDonald's CEO Chris Kempczinski has described CosMc's as a "small-format concept with all the DNA of McDonald's, but its own unique personality." The restaurant aims to offer a unique experience while staying true to the core McDonald's brand.

TikTok user @snackolator gave a sneak peek of the menu, which includes a wide range of drinks like signature galactic boosts, iced teas, lemonades, slushes, frappes, and various hot and iced coffees.

The food options are just as diverse, with sandwiches, McMuffins, McFlurries, ice cream, baked goods, snack boxes, and international treats like McPops.

The TikToker shared: "The kind of conventional thinking is that this is going to be something of a competitor to like Starbucks, where it's going to focus on the McCafe stuff and the coffee and the drinks as opposed to serving burgers and fries, which makes even more sense when you realise that this CosMc's is being built directly next to an existing McDonald's."

Excitement is growing as McDonald's plans to launch CosMc's in select locations early in 2024. More details are set to be revealed during McDonald's investor day in December. The name CosMc comes from a retro McDonald's alien mascot from the company's fictional universe, McDonaldland.

The robot, which starred in McDonald's adverts from the 1980s, was a six-armed alien named CosMc who loved munching on McDonald's grub during his Earth visit. In a commercial aptly titled "The Story of CosMc", Ronald and Grimace are seen strolling when a peculiar object lands before them.

This object sprouts six arms and an orange face, introducing itself as, "Hi-ho Earth people, CosMc here. I popped in from outer space on a trade mission."

CosMc swaps items held by Ronald and Grimace, including a picnic basket full of McDonald's food, with other objects. The narrator asks, "What was Ronald to do?" Ronald then whips out a giant "M" magnet, retrieves the food from CosMc, and encourages him to share.

They all sit down together for a McDonald's feast, and an excited CosMc departs to spread the word about his find on his home planet.

CosMc's reappearance comes after the viral success of the Grimace Birthday shake on TikTok, which helped boost McDonald's annual sales by 10.3 per cent.

The company reported a whopping 94% increase in net income for the quarter ending June 30 compared to the previous year, further cementing its place in the fast-food industry.
