Prince Harry has been trying to mend his relationship with his father, King Charles III - and he might have his wife to thank for it.

Harry and Meghan Markle dramatically left the royal family and stepped back from official duties in January 2020. The two moved to the United States and have not been shy in recent years about how out of place they felt among the British royals.

The Duke and Duchess of Sussex spoke of their experiences of feeling alienated during their Netflix documentary series, Harry & Meghan. Harry also heavily criticised his father and brother, Prince William, in his memoir Spare earlier this year.

Harry alleged that he and William got into a physical fight and that Charles didn't hug the young prince when his mum Princess Diana died in 1997. Despite the estranged father and son living an ocean apart, Meghan reportedly wanted to make sure that Charles' grandchildren had communications with him.

Harry, 39, and Meghan, 42, share two children - Archie, four, and Lilibet, two. The parents reportedly make sure that Charles is "up to date with their family life by sending him photos of the children," according to Omid Scobie's new book Endgame.

In addition to this, there was reportedly a phone call between Harry and Charles for the elder's 75th birthday a few weeks ago. It was supposedly a "warm conversation" between the father and son as Harry wished him a happy birthday. A video was also reportedly sent to Charles of Archie and Lilibet also wishing their grandfather the best.

Charles and Harry had "barely been on speaking terms for months" and the call was a "nice surprise" to the monarch. Many have speculated that the contact will pick back up again.

According to a source who spoke to the Daily Mail, King Charles wants "to spend more time with his grandchildren." Archie and Lilibet are the youngest of his five grandchildren. He also has step-grandchildren from his marriage to Queen Camilla.

Though Meghan doesn't want to completely cut her kids off from their royal family, the American-born actress reportedly said she didn't want to return to England because she "never felt at home" while living there.
