Manchester United will be aiming to move past their Champions League disappointment as they return to domestic action.

The Red Devils let a two-goal lead slip away to Galatasaray last time out and now see their place in the competition under real threat. Their next assignment sees them away from home once more as United travel to St James’ Park to take on Newcastle.

Erik ten Hag’s side could potentially go within one point of the top four with a victory in the North East. Take a look at all of the news coming out of Old Trafford over the past 24 hours:

Ten Hag defends Onana

Man United boss Ten Hag has attempted to defend under-fire goalkeeper Andre Onana by claiming that he is ‘one of the best’ in the Premier League. The Cameroonian has endured a miserable start to life at Old Trafford with his latest mistake coming in the midweek draw in Istanbul.

Speaking ahead of the trip to Newcastle, Ten Hag said: “If you analyse it well, then you see he's the second-best goalkeeper in the Premier League, based on stats. His expected number of preventing goals is the second-best in the Premier League.

“He's doing well, but he knows that in the Champions League he has made some mistakes, but all over, in the first five months, he has done well.”

Onana could face ban

Amid his ongoing rollercoaster form, Onana could actually be in line for a ban should he take drastic action. Reports claimed that he was considering snubbing a call-up to the Cameroon squad for next year’s AFCON. If he does that though, FIFA rules may prevent him from playing for United for the length of the tournament anyway.

Their regulations state: "A player who has been called up by his association for one of its representative teams is, unless otherwise agreed by the relevant association, not entitled to play for the club with which he is registered during the period for which he has been released or should have been released… plus an additional period of five days."

United consider striker swoop

Manchester United could be set to enter the transfer market for a striker once again despite already spending £72m on Rasmus Hojlund. Stuttgart centre forward Serhou Guirassy is considered as a potential option for January and would be a bargain signing given the £15m release clause written into his contract.

The Guinea international, 27, only made a permanent move to the Bundesliga in the summer following a season on-loan from Rennes but already has 15 goals in ten league outings.
